Exhaust mod- for sound only or do you gain?

I've thought about modding the exhaust but it is pretty expensive, particulary to do the full cat back, and I'm just wondering how much if any do you really gain in performance?

I guess if i just want a better sound I can do an axle back and get by without breaking the bank but if a can get a REAL gain then I'll wait and do the whole thing. I get the idea of air flow but is it really cost beneficial to pump that kind of money into a car for what, if anything, you gain?

If you want a better sound add a axle back or cat back. If you want to deepen the sound and add hp put a set of hi flow cats. They do not require a tune and do not throw a CEL...

So based on that the more expensive cat back is not worth the money for me since I would only spend the extra money if I got a performance gain vs finding something like an mrt that can give me a decent sound without investing alot?

We seen some HP gains with the MRT axle-back but was mainly in the 5500 RPM range, not at peak...

A hair off subject, isn't it illegal in states with inspections, to remove the cats?

Both. Where I live we have no emissions testing so.......

My local muffler shop would not install longtubes w/out cats on my Chevy truck cuz its a hefty fine if they are caught doing it.

But he told me of several places I could go to get it done.
