Shrapnel on the road

So on my lunch break today, I went home to let my dog Simba out and to eat myself a homemade sandwich , on my way back I was enjoying the cool Texas air and I notice about 500ft in front of me that there appeared to be residue of a wreck or something in the middle lane, I see it in advance and move over to the next lane. 500ft later im coming up to this debris and this Jackhole in an F150 runs over it in front of me and the next thing I know theres a chunk of sheet metal flying right at me, it hit me right in the rear quarter panel near the passenger door. When I was able to get out and look at it theres a gash that goes to down to the metal about the size of my pinky nail and a streak along the side. Its pretty noticeable. A buddy of mine said that if I take it to him he would charge me $375 to fix it. I trust him, I am just pissed off and thought I would share this story. Anyone know how much it would cost if I took it to a dealer? I am assuming 500+ (picks below) P.s. Days RUINED

That blows. Good thing you have a buddy in the biz to help you out, though.

Ouch! That sucks!!

On the bright side that doesn't appear to be as bad as I would've though reading your post. Are you sure its down to the metal?

The trailing 'streak' looks like it could be buffed out. With things like this the initial point of impact might be the worst spot, but everything behind it is superficial. I had a similar thing happen with a hub cap flying off a car ahead of me.

Before jumping to a full repaint of the panel (because thats gonna be big $$$) see if its possible to buff out first. Anything remaining may be able to be repaired with a Langka or Dr. Colorchip kit.

My friend hasn't seen it in person. I also don't think the pictures do it much justice. I do think the trail can be buffed out but the initial point of impact is definitely down to the metal.

I would follow Dylan's recommendations and buff it out and see what you are left with. Take some Dr.Colorchip to it and you may save yourself 3 bills.

I've been pleasantly surprised with the stuff I've been able to fix in the past with systems like Dr. Colorchip.... its at least worth a try before spending big money on the fix. Even it if doesn't do the job you'll have it around for touchups of stone chips and other small paint mishaps.
