Smile Most American automaker by next year?

you guys are gonna like this one!

http://www.autoblog.com/2010/10/22/h...-by-next-year/

Quote:
Which automaker do you think is the most "American"? Some might say Chevrolet, since they're the self-proclaimed Heartbeat of America. Others might say Ford since the Mustang is as iconic an American image as baseball and apple pie. What if we told you the answer might just be Hyundai? As of next year, 80 percent of the vehicles that Hyundai sells in the United States will be made here as well.
/me puts on flame-suit.

Parts content, and their country of origin, plays a large part in overall %s. Assembly is only one factor, using the current "formula" for determining "Domestic" vs. "Import" status.

In Canada, the greatest number of "assembled" vehicles also sold in that country is by Toyota, who also assemble Lexus RX 350 (the only non-Japanese Lexus plant in the world). However, their "parts content" is not equal.

Follow the money. American businesses have their main offices in America and contribute to the American economy. THyundai contributes to the Korean economy. South Korea is a good country. They have a rich culture, and I hear it is a beautiful place. Their cars, however, are not American. Don't confuse American-assembled with American products.

Volkswagen, in Pennsylvania, and Hyundai, in Quebec, both have previous histories building plants with massive Gov't assistance, and then mothballing them...

Let's hope, this time, Hyundai sticks around.

Personally I think where a car is built is only a small portion of the test of which car is most american. Overall number of employees per county should be a bigger part.

Additionally, I think the most important factor in the "who's american" test should be WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING. If I buy a hyundai, do those profits go to Korea or do they go to America?

It is sad that their is even a possibility that a foreign manufacturer would make more cars in the US, that are sold in the US, than the domestic manufacturers. And this is based on a percentage standpoint. Not a total number.

What's even more devastating is that they don't have to deal with the parasitic UAW. If GM could get away with that, can you imagine how many more workers GM would employ? They wouldn't be living in mansions, but they would have jobs and contribute to the greater American economy. Instead, the UAW makes demands that cause domestic manufacturers to consider ways of staying in business, like hiring laborers elsewhere.

Yea the whole situation is pretty fubared. I am not trying to put all the blame on the big 3 for this.

The Public Service and Teachers Unions make the UAW look like paupers in comparison. Be glad they are not building our cars! (The members of those organizations tend to be pretty decent, but as a whole the organizations themselves are going to wind up doing massive damage to the US)

Actually, every time a foreign automotive company builds their vehicle here it is contributing to our GDP. This whole nonsense that involves "trade deficits," or where you import more than you export, is an irrelevant, nonexistent Keynesian attempt at economics. Also, if you really do follow the money, you'll see that the dollar is returning to the United States in all cases.
