I have run Kooks, and with the stock catback, they are not offensive, however I also would not describe the soudn as "great".

The first part is with Kooks 1-7/8 and catted connection pipes with all stock exhaust and muffler. Then the diverters open OMG!

I'm running OBX longtube headers with cat delete midpipes and the stock cat-back on a LS3. The sound is great!

I would consider different mufflers, I really like the way flowmasters sound with headers.
I have exactly what you mention here but with an Edelbrock X Pipe and I think it sounds ok. If there's any criticism, I think it sounds too raspy. I am thinking of putting the Flowmaster Hushpower axle back on it, but don't know if that would mellow the sound out or not. I haven't heard a sound clip with exactly my mods.

How a car sounds is a very subjective call. What may sound great to you may sound #%^&* to someone else. There seems to an age factor in all of this also. Younger drivers just want LOUD. I understand that; years ago, I drove around on the street with open headers. Older guys tend to reject the "louder the better" approach and put more emphasis on the tone and quality of the sound in addition to volume.

With that said, I have 1-7/8" Kooks LTs, high-flow cats and a stock exhaust system. I personally feel it the best balance between loud on WOT and quiet at freeway cruise with none of the dreaded drone. My car has a Maggie S/C and it sounds awesome on WOT.

As others have already said, it is a proven fact that there is very little, if any, power gains to be had after the cats...only sound changes.

...and the Jeanetty test showed that there was no difference really between high flow cats and off-road pipes.

LTs with high flow cats and the stock mufflers sounds pretty good, especially if you want some rumble without it being too loud.

Has anyone done a dyno with this set up before, and then put on a 3" cat back to see how much low end torque is lost? Or at least butt-o-meter results?

I would really like to see some more of you people cam your car with the stock catback on it. One person has and it picked up trq. Its my belief that the ls3 when cammed likes the additional backpressure. One forum member gained power and trq by going back to the stock catback on his cam setup.
