2010 Camaro SS vs 1969 Camaro ZL1

Alright I am not getting this at all...

The Camaro ZL1 is what I have read to be the following
3300 pounds
430 hp
4:10 gears
hits 60 in 5.3 seconds

Yet the 2010 Camaro SS is the following
3860 pounds
425 hp
3:76 gears I think
but hits 60 in 4.6....

How is this possible?!?!?!

The ZL1 weighs like 500 pounds less yet it is .7 seconds slower!?!? but also what are the tire width on the 2010 Camaro SS cause I know 9.5 is the width on the 69 ZL1... Any help will be appretiated

It continues to amaze me. Ford guys think their shit is so great. Why then do you need DOHC and 4 valves per cyl. plus forced air to beat a production pushrod engine with 2 valves per cyl. Face it, when it comes down to it Ford just can't compete. New slogan for the Mustang. "You can't fix stupid"!

Simple. They did not rate engine horsepower the same way in the '60's as they do today. By today's standards, the ZL1 engine would only be rated about 376HP at the flywheel.

Remember, back in the day a stock car had about 5 inch wide tires. To put things in perspective, back in 1967, Nickey Chevrolet put a 427/425hp over the counter motor in a 67 small block Camaro (apparantly 396's were not available in early '67). With only some carb and distributer tweeking and some better tires the car ran 11.90's, through the stock manifolds.

The 1969 ZL1 427 engine was very underated in HP. The heads were designed to run with headers, so they were very choked up with stock manifolds, 2 1/4 exhaust systems and smog equipment.

The Stock 14"X7" wheels with F70 polyglass tires (most ZL1s) had virtually no traction, the straight axles rear end and supsension were low-tech even for 1969.

Pure stock Drag Spec ZL1s Camaros are running in low 11 e.t.s on those little tires.

ZL1 tuned properly over 500HP
In a prepped car mid 10's

Too bad the winters casted stuff was imo junk....
Later in the era better alum parts came from Don Yenko but alas that was a long time ago...

Me I love the ZL1 but it was not one of my favs.
I would take a Nickey or Yenko over it

2010 SS prepped vs prepped 69 ZL1 would be cool but in the end I believe the ZL1 would win

ZL1 would kill it in a race with the same rearend and tires.

It's ALL about traction.

The poster talking about HP rating methods is full of crap. There WAS a change in the early '70s from gross (flywheel) to net (rear wheel) HP ratings, that made those '70s ratings LOWER than previous measures, not higher.

ZL1 has been rated stock at up to 575hp and 500lb/ft torque. In a car almost 600lbs lighter, with 150hp advantage? It would be like racing a Ferrari Enzo today. As soon as it hooked up, you'd be lucky to be able to focus your eyes fast enough to see it leave a new SS.

They didn't go to rear wheel horsepower. They went from flywheel with no accessories to flywheel with all accessories; ie, ac compressor, powersteering pump, mechanical fan and alternator. Still made the ratings lower, but still at the crank.

As far as the original question goes, the ZL1, although it'll have made traction issues.

well your close.
went from SAE gross at Crank to SAE net at Crank in 1972.

Then to SAE certified crankshaft horsepower in 2005.

ZL1 was rated with no accessories and no drive-train loss. Today's hp numbers include the accessory's. I'm not 100% sure about that, but I'm pretty sure this is how it was.
