Why are aftermarket exhausts SO FREAKING EXPENSIVE for these cars?

Hi,

I remember on my 5th gen I did a good catback on it fully installed for less than $1000. And on my older cars, even less.

Now you got the Borla ATAK selling for $2200 USD (or $2750 CAD...)....Are you kidding me? For something that is literally just SOUND?

I did Headers and High flow cats for less than that.

Sorry, that's the end of my rant.

Thats the norm now. Maybe the engineering cost has increased on newer cars due to standards, the law and tech.

That's why I'm going with MBRP. Most sites I've seen have axle backs around $600 and full catback for a little over $800. Granted, they don't retain the NPP, but I've already pulled the fuse anyway. But I completely understand your rant and agree. I think my full exhaust with Pacesetter headers on my 2000 SS was about $800.....

Also, MBRP hails from Ontario, that could save you some cost as well (doesn't anything from across the border come with ridiculous cost through customs for you guys?)

Everything is expensive. We are paying Corvette prices for mods. You can blame the slow Camaro sales and that some are paying the high prices they are so desperate.

I have been gouged and am laying off any significant mods for now.

Not enough competition. Does not cost nearly 2700 CAD for a frigging exhaust.

Even the price of exhausts and such for the 2015+ Mustangs are ridiculous. I remember jumping from the s197 to s550 and the price jump in mods that came with it. It seems across the board for newer cars.

Hey bud,

I was looking at them but they only make exhausts for M6 Camaros? Or do I have that wrong.

Agree as well, after market / manufacturer gouge fest. $300 for knee pads , $ 250 for a gas lid, $1900 for Axle back with NPP. I would never pay that kind of $$ for mufflers.... NEVER...
Obviously personal preference and not a knock on those that buy.

The only thing I can think of is the R&D costs behind it. If it wasn't for the NPP stuff I'd have a shop fudge in a custom setup for the volume for fraction of the cost.

Supply and new demand. I suspect the same to happen to the new mustang.

There's nothing special about an exhaust that's cat back from this car to any car made since cats were invented (except those that include npp). It's just a matter of R&D and materials and production not being spread across enough consumers so build volume is low which makes the parts cost more to build and so have to be priced higher to make any sort of profit on top of paying their employees and other such bills.

I dont expect this to change anytime soon. Especially if the same exhaust wont be compatible across most/all of the generation.

Could have an exhaust shop build an exhaust system for you probably for much less. Hard to imagine it performing any worse than an MRT exhaust.
