2010 Camaro SS manual daily driver

I live in Northern Illinois.

Our winters are pretty mild with occasionally a big snow storm. Our streets get cleared pretty quickly also.

I work 14 days a month and drive only 2 miles to work.

My question; If I get a set of the best snow tires from Tirerack with 17-18" wheels will I go through snow? With the traction control I figure it would be ok. Plus we only get a couple decent snow falls each year. I could take a personal day if its really bad.

I don't have room for another car besides the Camaro SS.

What suggestions on tires and sizes. Such as Dunlop M3/D3, etc.

Thankyou very much ahead of time.

I really want this car and this is my only real concern.

I am in the same boat. I must live very close to you. My wife drives our minivan and I will only be able to afford and fit just the Camaro SS.

Answers and opinions please. I also work very close to home.

I think top quality snow tires should be ok. Maybe a few sand bags in the trunk. As long as the snow tires are narrow and tall they should go through snow. Just take it easy.

Well the mule was tested in snow for a signifucant amount of time so I believe that the Camaro can handle it for sure.

I wonder what size winter wheel will be needed to clear the 14"/14.4" Brembo brakes? Plus tire size. Maybe 18"x8" wheels all around with 245/60/18" Dunlop M3/D3.

Hey Steve I did some research at Tirerack and I think the best tire for the SS in winter would be the Blizzak LM-25. The 225/60HR/18" are the same height as the OEM 20" SS tires at 28.7" The OEM 275 rear tire is 11" wide, the OEM front tire is 9.6" wide, the Blizzak 225/60HR/18" are 9" wide. They are to be used all around, more narrow to cut through snow, they cost $178 each. I think an 18" wheel will clear the SS OEM Brembos. 18" wheels can be bought for about $200 each, so a set of winter tires and wheels would be about $1800 total.

I was forced to drive my 97 Z/28 for a couple weeks one winter due to problems with my jeep. I didn't have snow tires but driving it was possible as long as I planed my route ahead of time to avoid even the shallowest hills. Filling your trunk with a few sand bags would be a good idea too.

I had to drive my IROC in the winter because, well, I didn't have another car... One thing that helped me was starting in second. Although, traction control should accomplish the same thing...

Well I only work 14 days a month, but from 6am-6pm. I am not walking 2 miles in the winter for an hour, then work 12, then walk another hour. I get up early enough now.

It should be fine with top quality snows, a few sand bags, and traction control. No need to hurry.

My situation is similar. I live in Southern NJ and winters are pretty mild. We might get a significant amount of snow once or twice a winter (last year we never got anything worth mentioning). And I live 3.5 miles from work.

I drove my 2002 Camaro when I had it and never had a problem. I've never bothered with special tires for winter.

I drove my '82 and '91 Camaro's 20+ miles to work in the winter with no special tires. Unless it was REALLY bad I was fine with them as well. Snow was less of an issue than ice.

I doubt I'll be doing anything special during the winter for the new Camaro either...

Winters have been getting milder and milder around here so as long as I have a garage for the Camaro I'll be fine. Or I'll just take the Saab when the weather is really bad (or the Volt when I trade my Saab for one of those).

I had a '99 Z-28. Never got stuck once. I used the all season 16" wheels in the winter, and the 17" SS wheels in the summer. I put 2-3 bags of salt in the back, and had traction control. I had a major hill to climb as well, and still never had an issue. Drive like there is snow on the ground and you should be fine. I plan on driving in the winter. I'm along interstate 74 in Illinois.

I can't imagine having trouble if you get the winter tires.

Okay educate me here, but the bags everyone keeps reffering to, is that to help the RWD? I've only ever driven FWD.
