Wheel Bearings (How to Replace them?)

Just wondering off hand if anyone on the forum has ever dealt with replacing wheel bearings on their vehicles. Due to the cost of doing it through a dealership I've been tossing the idea recently of doing it myself.

In fact, I found a relatively to the point how to guide and oddly enough it's not that hard.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever decided to attempt what I may do on their car?

it all depends on the car, and are you talking FRONT wheel bearings or rear. a LOT of fronts are not "replaceable" on newer models, you have to get a new hub/disc and they come installed. they are a sealed unit, and you just don't press the ond ones out and press new ones in like in the "old days". my wifes last buick was like that.

It's an '01, so it'll have the sealed unit. Priced around 120 per unit or so. Rears on the Explorer are the same. It's been diagnosed as the fronts as far as I know when it was last in the shop (they have a lift, I don't.. asked them to check it out).

However, from what I'm seeing the disc/caliper/caliper back plate are independent of the hub itself. And having had them off before I'm thinking I should have a problem with this. Rears (if needed) have been off completely before (seal change), it's just the front ones that worry me.
