Front pad modification? (1 or 2 SS only)

Has anyone here cut-off the roller weights from the stock front brake pads? I may do this so I can use 18" rims for winter. . .

Others have remove the weights and report little to no change with the noise levels.

Yes you can remove the weights BUT think of why they are there.

The weights are designed to reduce the noise created by the break pads. Remove the weights ... possibly induce alot of brake squealing.

Some that removed the weight report no change in noise. My own feeling is that the brake noise is a personal taste 'issue'. By that I mean some are far more sensitive to brake noise and it bother them. I have been using performance brake pads for years and in good weather drive race pads on the street. The OE Camaro pads were quiet by comparison to me. I removed my weights and felt there was no difference.

It really has a great deal to do with how you process brake noise. I am not saying that those it bothers are wrong. Clearly the brake noise is an issue or GM would not be working so hard to eliminate it. I am saying for others we accept the noise as part and parcel of high performance brakes.

Pete is right. I had my calipers powdercoated and didn't even think about the weights, so the coater removed them without asking me. If I'd have thought about it I probably would have said leave 'em on, or reattach them after. But I don't even notice any noise. Maybe somebody else might, but I have a high frequency hearing loss, so it would have to be pretty loud for me to hear anything. I have felt low frequency vibrations--noise that some would call growling--on my other cars through the brake pedal, but so far on the Camaro--nothing.

I didn't cut mine off, but I did replace them with Hawk ceramics. Now that the roller skates are gone, I can fit a spare tire, plus the amount of brake dust is greatly reduced.
