But don't you remember that when the 4th gen was launched, there was only 1 v8 model. Gm was getting ready to drop the axe on the camaro program before the 4th gen was every made. There wasn't money and interest enough in the program to do a base model v8 camaro and a Z28.
So they just badged all v8 cars with Z28. then in 96, GM and SLP worked out a deal for SLP to install a CAI and exhaust, new wheels, hood, spoiler and a few other things to make the cars into SS/Z28s.
a short while later, GM brought the process in house and officially launched the SS option as a separate version.

This section, over some considerable time and discussion, has spent a fair amount of time formulating an all-Gen-friendly (?!) version of the iconic ZEE...and the closest GM has come to creating such a version is the soon-to-come 2013 1LE which, fortunately or otherwise, is a 6-speed manual-only version...for now.

Z28 means a dozen different things to 12 people...and you can figuratively consider yourself as one of those "dozen". Where the lines get a lil bit murky is when the Gen-3 and -4 versions are regarded as the "proper" versions, for that version already exists. It's called the SS, currently...the Base V8 version with some handling, appearance and comfort upgrades from the Base V6 versions. The 2013 SS will feature further improvements/enhancements that no doubt will improve owners' experiences.

Would/will GM build an Automatic version of "our" desired version? Anything's possible...including Automatic ZL1s, whose availability surprized more than a few...

There DOES seem to be a distinct deliniation between a Z/28...and a Z28... Frame of reference is the "problem".

Again, welcome!
So... we've got a Z/28 and a Z28... what about a Z-28?

ALL Z/28s AND Z28s have a LOT of "dash" in 'em... ...or SHOULD have!

Hopefully soon we'll all need flame suits as this will be the hottest thread on the forum.

Well the automatic Z28 idea I thought might strike a raw nerve over here. Autos don't track but they do drag.

Volume is a "magic" word, these days. Is it "unholy" to consider an Automatic ZEE? Not likely MY cup of tea but, if it helps persuade "the powers that be" to build what WE want, so be it.

After all, who expected an Automatic ZL1, 'way back when?

Without it, the ZL1 may not have seen the light of day...

I wouldn't say no for others, but not for me. If it helps get this Camaro built I'm all for it.

I'm pretty sure we'll see a Z/28 before some kind of goofey 2LE.

by the 3rd gen the Z28 had honestly lost it's way. just my opinion. and the 4th gens are why so many people are confused as to why the Z28 is wanted more than an SS.

I guess in some ways it does strike a raw nerve over here, my personal opinion is that a Z/28 should never have an auto tranny, I think the only options should be close ratio manual and HD close ratio manual. Now that said, in the interest of live and let live, since there seem to be so many "non-purists" that simply must have an auto tranny on a Z/28, then I guess it would be a good option for Chevy to offer. Mind you, I'd never order one that way, but there seem to be many that would. My wife and I are both on the north side of 60 years old and her comment was "I wouldn't have a Z/28 with anything other than a manual tranny", and trust me, she can "row em"!

You are a lucky dog Clyde. My wife is north of 50 and she wants(Z28) an auto tranny. My preference is for a manual but she does have half the vote. I am still working on her and somehow I think I will win should they build it. Lets hope Chevy does build the Z28, and soon.
