My rear is the stock housing. It's with DSS axles, LPE 3:91, Tru-Trac posi, covered with a LPW cover. The poly-graphite bushing, backside of the cover, (which is same location as stock) split or cracked so the unit was moving. This happened about 10,000 plus miles or so after the build.

Yes, as we many have, done a couple a massive dump clutch burnouts in the early days after the Camaro's build up, but last year or so not anymore. I'm guessing that bushing was damaged during pressed in, and it finally wore enough it became an issue.

Also, my assumption was the 9" also re-used that same mount location, ... if not my bad.

Hope you find that clunk.

Got it. You're absolutely right. The 9" does use that mount location. Looks like rubber on the Strange diff housing. Either way, I'll take a look at it. I rocked the car tonight myself and heard the clunk so you might be on to something! Thanks!

Hey all. Finally had a chance to get back at the car after more business travel. I got the car just off the ground and pulled the wheels. I started on the driver's side by pulling the axle nut off and pushed on the center of the axle. It moved in about 1/2 an inch. Passenger side was pretty much exactly the same...it was just a bit harder to move in and out, but when it did, it went about .500". That said, what I DID find was exactly what the DSS had suggested in post #21....the driver's side axle nut was no longer torqued to spec. Correct me if I'm wrong, but 190ft/lbs is proper spec, right? I got everything back together and as close to 190 as I could (I only weight 170 and my torque wrench goes to 150 for measurement so a good bounce on the wrench is as tight as I could go without calling a heavier friend LOL. Once back together, the noise is SUBSTANTIALLY better. I no longer hear it when in and out of the throttle and it takes a semi-violent clutch drop (at a slow speed) to get the clunk clunk clunk to happen while the drive train settles into the power I abruptly applied. I have videos of both side axles moving, but don't think I need to post them (unless it would be helpful for others to see). In short, time to call a heavier friend/higher rated TQ wrench and get those axle nuts closer to 190ft/lb! Thanks for everyone's help, now let's see what this car can do!

I had the same issue with axles. I used red loctite on them as well as torquing to 200lbs. I think the actual number is 199lbs.

I am having the EXACT same problem. I was getting drive line lash and some "grumbeling" from the reae. My mechanic said the half shaft was starting to fail and there was some excess movement in the center section. I got the DSS shafts hoping that would be enough. After installation and about 500 miles of driving... the DSS boot was cracked and leaking grease (which has gone back for warranty) BUT... there is a HORRIBLE and totally random banging from the rear. It just "happened." Parked it in the gaarge one day... no issue... next day...

That is to say everything was basically fine. I get in the car one morning and its banging randomly. So bad I decided to tow it to the shop.

I suspect that something is buggered in the pumpkin. I don't drag race but the car has seen about 20 track days. (50,000 miles on the car).

any insight from the veterans?

PS: I can source a wrecked ZL1 so I was thinking I would just buy a pumpkin. Is that viable?

Your issue doesn't sound the same. I don't seem to have a diff issue. I'm also running the DSS 9" rather than the stock rear. You might want to start a new thread to ask folks for guidance.
