So I tried something a little different. Improved MPG's

After loading up the car to go visit the girl's parents earlier this week I was dreading the $65 fill up. I saw my box of parts which had some extra intake stuff in it. So I tried adding a second cone to my intake. I know it's over kill...I'm wearing my flame suit because i know some people are going to freak....but the improvements are awesome! The hour drive stuck on 55 mph zones going 58-60 my average mpg over about 50 miles was 35mpg! Today on the highway(50 mile trip) cruise set at 70 I almost got 31! And that was with about 6 miles of city driving. Before I was getting about 25mpg at 70mph and 22-24 at 73mph. I may just leave it on! Oh and this is improvement without disconnecting the battery. I forgot...I'm afraid to do it now. Don't know if the outcome would be good or bad.
P.S. Yes i know I don't have a heat shield so I know it's hot air.

They also don't add high flowing exhaust or CAI even though they add performance and economy. It's the loud factor

50 - 60 MPH is the sweet spot for the V6.
If I keep it there I could do 33-34 MPG all day long with
the summer gas formula and stock intake.

Why do you think that? You can do a tune and get better mpg, why didn't gm tune it for the best mpg then? You can put headers on it, and pick up mpg. Why didn't gm do this either? You can do a cold air intake and pick up some mpg's also....so why didn't they do that either. They could have made the car lighter, wheels lighter, aluminum drive shaft all if which will help mpg's.....just cause it can be done doesn't mean gm would have done it.

few weeks back i set my car at 60 mph on the highway it was a flat section and i managed 35.6mpg over about 5 miles with a mpg reset at 60 mph with just a K&N intake and using Amsoil. I recently installed an Exhaust from Stainless Works so i will be trying it again to see how much it improves. I already notice a few mpg increase already but i will know for sure when i drive on a longer trip this weekend. Amsoil by itself added about 1-2 mpg and the intake added another 1-2 so i went from 31-32 at 60 to 35.6 mpg. Hoping for 36-38 MPG at 60 that would be killer.

hmm - good for you that it worked. I would like to know the science behind why this worked though or if it was just the right temp and speed produced this result. Interesting

I'm talking only MPG, nothing else. There are lots of reasons not to do the other things you mention such as emissions, safety, warranty issues, state laws, etc, but not MPG. G.M. would like nothing better than to be able to claim better MPG on their cars especially with such an easy fix.
I could be wrong but I'm still doubting your large MPG increase.

I remember when I was young an dumb and street racing in high school we would take off our air cleaners and disengage the vacuum hose on the carb secondaries (Rochester carb). I hate to admit it, but once I sucked in the hood insulation and it floated the valves! Funny, Sad, but true. A lesson learned. That was my 67 GTO. Later on, I restored it and showed it in Charlotte NC Civic Center shows. Did great. See pic to left. I have since had to sell the car, but am counting on getting a ZL1 when they become available. It will fill the void.

But my other car was amazing. It was a 1970 350 2bbl Nova with 250 HP and a 3:08 Posi rear 4 spd. See my album. It turned constant 13.8 in the qtr with street tires. I had J-70 tires on it though with air shocks. I felt rather proud because I was beating SS350's 396's and even 440 GTX's and even a 426 hemi here and there because all they would do is let me get a 6 car hole shot..... It was an amazing Nova. I ran it at Aquasco speedway in Maryland in late 60's. Then I got bold and put a 4 BBl on it with headers. It was a dual feed 650 Holley. The damn car slowed down to 14.6's in the qtr. Almost lost a full second. WHY? Because the carb was flooding. The stock CAM could NOT handle the gas. I learned that sometimes you just don't bolt sh*t on and get away with it. Never again. I will max tune what the factory gives me. That's it. I like the idea of CAI you have. I hope Chevy will inlcude all items necessary from factory to make it the ZL1 perform high 11's factory stock with stock tires. Would simply be a dream. Thanks for the Air breather story! Good one!
