900 mile trek from dealership to home
flying out to boston to pick up me new black 2SS/RS and will be driving the 900 miles back home to SC. I got this car for 3K below what anyone else would go on the east coast and need to know how I should handle the break-in while driving it home on saturday. Just varying speeds and gears while cruising down I-95??
Planning on doing a 400 mile stint with an overnight in DC and then doing the remainder of the trip on Sunday morning, so should I get an oil change in DC perhaps?? Not sure what to do, so any opinions, comments, suggestions, rants would be great. |

Congratulations on your new Camaro!
About all you can do safely on the way home is vary your speed, like you suggested, take frequent breaks, and accellerate up every on ramp. If you can fiind a few spots to slow down and run it up to 80ish hard, I'd try that, but I'd be concerned about getting a ticket if you try any performance drving in an unfamiliar area. At least you're driving out of DC on a Sunday morning, which will have less traffic than any other day. I definately would hold off on the oil change until you return to Charlotte. |

You should be fine. The manual only states not to exceed 4000 rpm and not to use cruise. I changed my oil at 1600 for the first time and it was fine. The filter should catch anything in it. They don't even recommend an early oil change in the manual at least.
Good luck on the drive back! |

I'm probably going to have to drive all the way down the eastern seaboard in the snow and rain. Weather forecast on the today show was for snow all long the eastern seaboard this entire weekend. So much for Saturday being clear! This trip is looking to be a long one.

This is probably not an acceptable option, but have you considered postponing the delivery a day or so to let the weather break, or leave a day later on Sunday if the weather is forecasted to be better? I wouldn't want to take any car on a a trip that long in snow/rain, especially a new one that has Summer tires on it.

the weather is set to roll in on Sunday, but we will be in DC by then and it's supposed to be rain and not snow. I'm going to play it by ear and if the road conditions change rapidly, I'm gonna get a hotel room and wait it out. That's why I'm bringing along a hot navigator/copilot!! :-D

Just an update:
This car is INCREDIBLE We ended up driving the entire 900 miles from Boston to Charlotte and arrived home this morning at 6.30 am. 900 miles in 12 hours! No incidents weather related or otherwise-- or tickets. I passed 4 sports cars from Jersey to Raleigh that got pulled over coming down I 95 and every single car was white. 2 vettes, a GT3000 and a porsche 911. Glad I got a black car :-) I averaged only 19 mpg as I was varying rpms and speeds with the new motor. The weather was clear from Boston all the way into Virginia and the last 300 miles felt like an eternity with the rain and exhaustion setting in. I'll be installing the hurst SS, Dynamaxx headers w/ catted midpipe, MBRP L99 system, and CAI this weekend. Last edited by full of days; 12-14-2009 at 07:50 AM. |

Congrats on your new Camaro and the safe trip back South. Good timing on your part as it started icing up here and in Boston around 6:00 PM tonight. Roads through CT are now bad and you will find the Camaros SS tires don't like temperatures below 35 degrees.
Re your MPG- don't expect more than 20-22 (with cruise control) on the interstates. No one I know has bought a Camaro SS for the mileage- LOL> Enjoy your new car.

Thanks guys!
We caught some light misting/freezing rain around Baltimore at @ 2 am for around 10 minutes and then it was clear for an hour. The last 270 miles down 95 to 85 and thru Raleigh-Charlotte was rainy and made for an interesting drive, but the Heavy Chevy broke right on thru with no probs. I got the fastblack upgrade for no additional charge :-D |
