There were some SLs and a few AMG SLs that I could have swung in my price range. Boy, I sure like the looks of an all-black SL AMG, but have you seen how much an engine for one of those costs? It's off the charts, and anything that breaks or needs fixing will run you into the ground quick. I got the SS instead, and it has some pretty nice features, if it does ride a little stiff compared to a "luxury" car.

Do you have any idea how much AMG cars cost to maintain? You're talking a few grand a year. I almost bought a AMG 500 2 dr, I forget what year but new it was 125K. I brought it to my buddy's shop and we went over it with a fine tooth comb, then another friend of his stopped by that was a MB mechanic and he filled me in on the upkeep & the what if's something breaks. Be prepared to spend 1000's if even something minor goes. Sure it was fast, and considered a "super car", but I just didn't feel right driving it, made me feel like I should've been back in Boca Raton, FL....MB are solid car's, the wife has a GLK and I love the safety aspect of it, she's a doctor...she can afford when something breaks on it.

I just googled replacement engines for E55's and they seem to be cheaper to rebuild or replace then LS9 and Aluminum block 2011+ GT500 crate engines which are $22,000-$25,000 new?
I as well as others dont consider the lower priced LSA in the same league as the hand built and forged LS9/ 2011-2013 GT500 engine. http://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/4...e-rebuild.html |

I own both, camaro SS and E55. I have no complaints with either car. Parts really arent that much more expensive than parts for the Camaro if shopping through the dealer.
Both cars are fantastic...the E55 I just took down the track this past Saturday for the first time and ran 12.6 @ 115 on street tires. That mph is good for 11's stock. As for outdated I would have to disagree. Do you all not think a 68 or 69 camaro or 2nd gen camaro is not outdated? People want to buy those in place for other cars, what's the difference for a car like the E55? Especially when it's 40 years newer? To each their own, but either way I dont think you will be disappointed. Good luck with your decision. |

I talked to my parents and they said Camaro. They said I could get an AMG down the road when I'm older, but said the Camaro will be a fun car for my age.

Sure the Camaro wins the looks contest and everyone loves the Bumble Camaro from all the Transformers movies. If I am going to spend this kind of money on a car its gonna be the one I want, not which one is gonna win a popularity contest. I think you should go drive both the way they were intended to be driven and maybe find locals who have modified versions of the cars in question and ask if they can take you out for a ride and then make your decision. E55's make crazy torque (800+ft lbs) with just bolt on's like intake, exhaust, pulley, tune and should deliver more smiles per mile/ dollar then a 5th gen Camaro. Plus the E55 should give you a ton more street cred  Speed Channels Test Drive with Tommy Kendall RENNtech Stage 1 Dyno, Drag http://youtu.be/LqPu3WmUQKE Street test http://youtu.be/4gef1BWhD3A Photo's RENNtech AMG Photo shoot Last edited by BigDan; 02-01-2012 at 03:35 AM. |

A friend of mine has an E55 AMG that I have driven, and I must say it was very nice and fun to drive. The power delivery is very unique in that it is just steady and constant (never excessive nor feels winded). However, IMO if you don't need the room of a real back seat I would pick the camaro since it is so much easier and cheaper to maintain and add horsepower to. Parts galore exist for the camaro that you just can't find or afford for the merc.

Honestly if you got the money get the E55. People usually ignore maintenance costs when purchasing a car and this something that NEEDS to be considered if you get it. If you are saving every penny to afford the E55 then DO NOT GET THE E55.

I was looking to get a E63 before my Camaro, and then I found out just how much routine maintenance costs, and now I have a Camaro |

Dad's saying E55, mom's saying Camaro.
I want to test drive an E55 first, and it's also a pain trying to find one with less than 35K miles.

I own Both also
I choose the Camaro over the Benz on most days as it is more fun to drive and not a worry if something breaks (although I just past 28k on the Camaro w/o a single issue) Any used e55 must have been maintained with records to be even considered. I just drove an e55 here in Houston Modified and in good shape for 30k and it is beyond fast: Camaro - good car much bigger inside the the e55 E55 - Great car - bang for buck in the used market may be the best! So it is down to a choice - I Love my Chevy I have a 1992 500e also we call our garage Uber Garage it sits next to my 02 Camaro Intimidator so I am not on either side of the fence!
