I wonder if GM will offer that build deal to other builders as well or did he some how finagle this as a one off only?

I highly doubt they will be as collectible....in 20 years, will anyone remember the show or care who Rawlings is? They would be more collectible if a name like calloway or hennessy were building it. And really, anyone can get the parts to build one of these cars, so what he's doing isn't really that special.

I'm fairly certain that you don't want to trade your Texas weather for my Nebraska weather. Unless, of course, you enjoy tornados, hail, snow, hot, and cold. That's just in one week.

Well, the boss is getting ready to move some of his 40+ cars into the foyer of our new company headquarters. While they were arranging things inside, he put some of them outside for a quick photo-shoot. I grabbed a couple of snaps myself. All of the "non-customs" are numbers-matching, original cars. Enjoy.

L-R: 1969 Ring Brothers "Razor" Camaro (Google it), 1969 Camaro SS 396, 1971 Trans Am 455 HO, 1970 Chevelle SS 396, 1970 Mustang Mach 1 428 Cobra-Jet, 1969 Charger 440 Custom, 1967 Shelby GT Custom, 1970 Plymouth Superbird 440 6-pack:

Depends where youre located, the town I'm originally from in Louisiana? You could run it on the street. As long as you woulnt get on it. The cops are pretty good about letting you ride a vehicle in town if youre not being stupid. Not saying you could cruise daily in it that they wouldnt catch on, but on a Sunday or Saturday if you wanted to cruise around the town for a few minutes to show it off? It wouldnt be a problem.

NICE CAR! Your boss certainly has good taste.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

That being said, here's an Editorial (Flame Suit On):

IMO, the 2012/2013/Body-In-White program was a total flop and a bad joke.

Nearly all went to collectors, hence will have very little "history" to back up their worth in 20 years.

"What is so special about your 2013 (not-really-a) COPO Camaro?"

"Well, 69 were made."

"Anything else?"

"Uh, if you had wanted to race it, you could!"

"Is it the fastest?"

"Uh, not as sold."

Etc.

CC/SA was set recently by a heavily reworked "COPO" at 9.25@142. There have been street legal GM 5500lb diesel pickup trucks running nearly as quick, and just as fast. I ran a better ET in a Firebird with a stock GM Crate engine and mid-priced Powerglide at Las Vegas, which is known to be a slow track. That car cost less than $50k to build new. It wasn't a fast car.

Unless there are enough of these COPO cars out AT THE TRACK so potential street Camaro buyers know they exist (to advertise the Brand), or even some coverage of the NHRA classes they run in, there simply was no point.

They aren't COPO cars anyhow. COPO cars are units that were not supposed to be built. GM refused to go past 400ci engine options for Camaro, so some clever dealers ordered them via the Fleet Order system, AKA Central Office Production Order. They were in fact street cars, and a racer REALLY could buy one if he wanted one at MSRP or less. One sat unloved on a showroom for 2 years before they chopped the price down low enough to find a buyer.

I like the idea of the gen5 'COPO', but I can't figure out how it benefited anyone, much less General Motors.

Here: Build a stripper Camaro with a cheap 572 crate engine and a glide. Let the buyer do the cage. Just stuff a cheap 9" under it. Like the "COPO", sell it as GM Performance Parts part number. Now you have a $50k starting point drag car that the collectors won't give crap about, so perhaps somebody will actually buy one to race it.

Beautiful collection of cars. My brother-in-law had a 1970 Chevelle SS that looked exactly like your bosses. It even had the same motor. He sold it about twenty years ago. He still misses it!
