Can't make up mind: Mod my SS OR used ZL1
Man this is tough... Every morning when I wake up I change my mind. Trying to decide between modding my SS and giving it that personal touch or buying a used ZL1 that would leave me with no mod money for a long time. My camaro is a garage queen and something I want to have for a long time. Man is this tough!!!

If I could I would pick the ZL1, you can always mod that later!

Im on the same boat as you brother, I have had my camaro for two years already and it's just no fun since it's an L99 2SS. I need more power and I am really considering getting a 2015 ZL1 manual with all the goodies.

Nothing wrong with having both. And still mod the ss the way you plan.

Way too many unanswered questions here.
What is your budget? What are your HP goals? Are you looking for driveability or a weekend warrior? If money isn't too much of an issue, I'd definitely go ZL1, LT Headers, pulley, cold air intake and a tune nets people damn near 600rwhp all while maintaining that drive like stock aspect. Headers, cam, cai and a tune could net you over 500rwhp while being cheaper. But then you'd have to focus on the suspension aspect next...while the ZL1's magnetic suspension is Godlike from what people say. |

If your a serious racer that goes to the track then keep your ss and mod it. If you want a car that's fast right now then zl1. I for one think the ss is too heavy so you know what I think about the zl1..it's just too damn heavy. for a racer you will eventually hit a wall with a 4200 pound car meaning you'll get to a point were you will need so much more horsepower than the 3500 pound car next to you to beat it.

I never raced a zl1 but I raced a cts v and a c7 auto stingray and walked away from them pretty easily in my 500 plus rwhp 1le

One day I hope to have a twin turbo 427 sitting between my SS fenders. Wouldn't make sense to buy a ZL1 & rip out that awesome powerplant.
So to me, unless you have to have MRC, I don't see the point of trading into a ZL1.

What mods are you thinking about for a convertible? For strip or track, a convertible would not be on my on my engine power mod list. But that's just me.

First, we are talking a 'vert to 'vert swap. The mods that I was looking to do are a nice balance between power, performance, and aesthetics. The car is a weekend cruiser, not a track star. If I were to mod the SS I would be doing the basic bolt on package then adding a nice ground effects kit along with a number of other nice details to add to the look and "story" of the car. I would also be adding a few moderate suspension upgrades.
I'm guessing I could do all the mods I'm looking for for $8,000, ZL1 would cost me $15. Saving 7 thousand would be nice but that really isn't the main issue here. I can't decide between whether I want to have the ZL1 which is just an awesome car on its own, or a nicely modified SS that I've turned into something I created myself. I love hearing what others have to say, that's why I started the thread. But unfortunately what this is going to come down to is what's going to bring a bigger smile to my face when I walk into the garage on Saturday morning and get ready to turn the key for a cruise. Unfortunately my mind changes every five minutes. (Ugh) Last edited by CRISSIS; 07-11-2015 at 12:02 PM. |
