Engine oil temp

Guys, I'm curious what oil temp those of you with SC's are seeing. Mine seems a bit high, it peaks at 235-240 degrees. The oil is brand new Mobile 1 synthetic 5w30

I usually run right over the 200 mark. I would switch to Mobil 1 - 15w50 oil. Thats what LPE, ADM and other shops recommend running, especially in the heat.

That's where mine was before I installed the SC. I may have to try thicker oil.

Give it a shot - I run 15w-50 in the summer and 5w-30 when it gets cold here in SD.

how many quarts did you put in, i had the same issue when the dealer put my oil, i think they just put seven and it was running hot, however they recommended 8 quarts this time around and the car is right on the money 210 is constant. also I used the mobil one oil filter, the dealer uses pensky oil fitter.

if they make a gauge for it, people will worry about it

If they make a gauge for it, you need to worry about it.

GrinderSS - just wondering what your oil pressure is at idle.

GrinderSS - I see you are in Florida, temps about same as here in Texas. Your oil is WATER cooled by the engine oil cooler. So, your oil temp should be about 20 degrees hotter than coolent temp. Make sense? So, on a hot Florida summer day you can get very high temps. I sugest you cool the motor down some by installing a 160 degree stat that will lower coolent and engine oil temps. I am not supercharged, yet. With my 160 stat at highway speed in DFW summer I read close to 190 degrees coolent temp on my DIC and engine oil about 20 degrees higher on my counsel oil temp gauge. This is how it is supposed to operate. Also, if you have headers they pass very close to the oil/water cooler on driver side of car. I wraped my headers in that area to reduce the radiant heat onto the factory cooler. I also run Mobil 1 15-50 all year. Hope this helps.

I don't understand why thicker oil would yield cooler oil temperatures.

That makes sense. My water temp hovers around 200, mid day it gets up to 210. So that explains the temps I'm seeing. Thanks!

You are correct, it does not yield cooler temps. But it does coat and protect all moving parts, especially during the hottest months. I just threw that in as a sidenote to those living in hot areas. GM has used the thinner 5 w 30 that gives slightly better mileage. Just my 2 cents.

1SS guys with the same engine don't have a gauge. Maybe the leather makes the oil temp more critical in the 2SS.

A bit on the other side of the 200 mark is where I sit ... I use 15w50 as well and a 160* stat.
