Question Taking Care Of Stripes

I just changed my order to factory stripes. Is there any thing I should do to make them last longer/ resist fading as soon as I get it?

I don't know about that. All three of my Z28s had vinyl stripes, and they never faded, peeled, or cracked. I didn't do anything special to take care of them either, other than wash and wax them along with the rest of the car.

I'd say keeping them out of the sun wouldn't hurt - even paint will fade if left in the sun all the time.

Don't use a pressure washer on the car. A little Wax-as-you-dry on the vinyl really brightens them up. You can get about 10 years out of them before they start to show age if you take good care of them.

There is a trick I found that works good. Right before you get in your car EVERY TIME, you have to clap three times, touch the handle, clapp twice, stomp your left foot turn in a circle to the right, stomp your right foot, lick the window, jump twice, yell "WALLA WALLA BAM TICK TICK", open and shut the door three times, turn in a circle to the left, then get in the car and start as usuall. Oh, and wash and wax it when needed.

I just printed this off for future reference. I'm sure I'd forget a step in there somewhere

My brother had them on his 10th Anniversary Firehawk.

When I detailed his car, I used polish on them as well, being careful to avoid the edges. Never had an issue.

Just for clarification, what happens if you don't avoid the edges? Does the polish get up under the vinyl?

That's a beautiful car BTW

Well, depending on the type of wax you use, you could get white residue along the edges.

Thanks for the nice compliment on the car too.

What will happen if you pressure-wash it? This is what I usually do with my cars in the winter, since you can't exactly go out and hand-wash them...

Makes sense. Thank you.

And you're welcome. I had a 4th gen Trans Am, but always loved the Firehawk version.

"pressure wash"?! NO! NO! NO!

I can see having to go to one of those coin operated places in the winter, (I've taken my Jeep to one on occassion) but you don't want to use the high pressure setting, IMO.

But if you do, I'd suggest avoiding the edges. I doubt there'd be any problem, but "better safe than sorry".

The edges of the stripes will eventually start to flake away... it would probably be years, but it will happen.

What about those "soft-cloth" drive-thru car washes? I know that dealers tend to wash their cars like this, as opposed to a nice hand wash. Will this be harmful? Many people fear scratches/damage and such from these, but I've never actually seen these kinds of results.

Just curious, as this will be my DD so I'll be driving it all-year-round.

Thanks
