Hey Ladies & Gents, is this ticking sound normal? Help a paranoia freak settle down!
Hey Ladies & Gents.
So Yesterday, I went to an event called Race The Runway, what a blast. It was my first time dragging a car, normally I've done it on bikes, and I'll be honest. I was a bit nervous for my first time. So, we got 3 runs, and what do I do on my first run? the good old 1, 2, 1 wonder... I was tense and my hand was firm over the shifter, and I threw that bitch back into 1st... I slipped the clutch and as soon as the car nose dived the clutch went back in and all was well, it happened in the split of a second. I coasted the rest of the track because I was scared as shit, thought I did the good old "Money Shift" and just blew my motor on my first run. Long story short, pulled over... let the car run, oil temp, tranny temp etc... all within normal specs and the car sounded, and drove perfectly. I was doing some research on possible damage, and I've come to the conclusion that if I did any damage, it would be almost immediate, and I would know, bent valves, push rods etc... I know the LS3 ticks, and now I'm just being a paranoid idiot in thinking the car has developed a tick, me thinking it's a lifter, but I know it's probably just normal or the injectors but I just wanted to see if anyone else could let me know if the sound is normal. I may have dodged a super huge bullet, and I'm thankful for that. I've uploaded a video for you guys, the ticking I'm hearing is at the start of the video on the driver side. I also uploaded my results for the 1/4 mile and 1/2 mile trap speed, you can see the 1st run is the miss shift, and I said too hell with it, the 2nd run I was still psyched out and nervous so I took it easy, and the 3rd run I managed a 12.86 on the quarter bone stock, felt really good. Any help is appreciated I am a paranoid freak, and I obsess over the stupidest things as my past posts have proven. Thanks guys. - Slick |

That sounds to me like normal LS tick.
I don't think you have anything to worry about, but I would wait for some more opinions. I noticed it's more pronounced on your driver side. I have long tubes and mine is definitely louder on the passenger side.

Sounds pretty normal. Good, clean oil in it? I’m half deaf and if I put in both of my hearing aids, mine sounds like 8 sewing machines. And did from day one.

Normal. I've heard this on mine since as long as I can remember. Driven it over 80,000 miles since with no problems.

Sounds like normal valve train noise for an LS motor....
Pretty dang good times for 1/4 mile passes. Did you load the half mile speeds as well.... 194 Km/hr is about 118 or so mph, very rough guesstimate. Whats been done to the car? I run mile events and I agree, it's about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on....

I'm paranoid about mine with the huge billet roller cam. I've never had a proper way to describe until now. Thanks.... unless of course you have this listed as real property.

It's funny how they can lock out reverse when going >5MPH forward and how they can lock out second so you save fuel, but they can't lock out first when >50MPH.

That's a loud tick. If it wasn't there before the event you should have it looked at.

Mines the same way , louder on drivers side
I got a Howard's 224/234 112+4lsa with 6.20/6.40 lift I often think there must be a problem too. But I keep driving the piss out of it and nothing broke yet. Famous last words Figure if it does let go I'll will do a cheap junk yard swap with a different cam and repeat 4.8 to 6.2 they all fit and make enough power to spin tires and eat mustangs

Nothing done to the car, except a Catback exhaust, I just gave er, had a pretty good launch on street tires, may have gotten lucky on the 12.82 run. Was pretty happy considering it is stock from a performance side. The 194KM was the 1/2 mile trap, actually it's more like 3/8 of a mile, but I let off after the 1/4 because I was pretty happy with my runs. |
