I didn't have one but I knew a woman that had the Firebird version. I had a 1987 V-8 sport coupe and it was a pretty good car. It supprises me that the Iron Duke made the list but that the Mustang II did not. I rented a Mustang II when my '70 Mercury Montego was stolen and I brought it right back and swapped it for a Ford Fairmont six cyclinder because after a full throttle 1/4 mile run I was going about 50 mph, no lie. Thank the greenie weenies and Senator Ed Muskie for those abysmal excuses for cars. Enjoy round 2 of the muscle car because the hybrid loving fart sniffers from Southpark are trying to figure out a way to get rid of this round of high performance cars too. I will keep my '10 SS forever because of this. I am old enough to remember what the do gooders did to us.

The hell with that POS, I can't believe GM thought the car would help sales.

What is left unstated in the thread is the fact that this was the low end "fuel economy" model. We had been through 2 Arab oil embargos in the 1970's and gasoline trippled in price, our wages did not. That same year also had a "Crossfire Fuel Injected" Z-28 5.0 liter V-8. It is kind of like buying the 1 LS now. By the end of the production cycle, these cars had 5.7 liter V-8's and had gone through the IROC era. It took the car makers about twenty years to undo what the Tree Huggers did to us. The LS series of engines didn't just leap off of a blue print to take the place of the sixties engines, they were developed from the lows of the 1970's to the present. Remember, with the stroke of a pen, our government can ban our beloved V-8's.

My friend had the equivalent 1982 Firebird with the Iron Duke and a 4 speed manual! I almost bought it off him a few years ago to turn into a race car, but decided against it...

Besides being horribly underpowered for any car, let alone one with a Camaro badge on it, these engines were terribly trouble prone.

60k miles was about time for a head gasket. If one made it to 100k miles, it was due for a full rebuild. Rings, seals..... bad, bad, bad engineering design.

Nightmare of an engine..... and GM continued the lineage of the iron duke well into the 1990s.... the 4 cylinder models in cars like the Beretta, Cavalier, Celebrity....

Nasty engine.

The Iron Duke is the reason many Camaro fans continue to spit on anything with under 8 cylinders regardless of performance.

That era of automobiles is what GM is STILL trying to recover from. There are many people that purchased GM vehicles around that time and they still won't set foot on a GM lot..... my Dad is one of them. The last GM vehicle that he purchased was a 1984 Chevy Citation...

He purchased a Toyota last year I take every opportunity to mention the plethora of recalls on their vehicles. He told me last week that he instructed my Mom on emergency vehicle malfunction procedures.

The DUKE! HaHa! My friends and I are always talking about this because my best friend and I fixed up an old S-10 that we were gonna sell but ended up giving it to his brother. That truck ran great. He had over 200k miles on it before he sent it on it's way. The Duke earned its name I believe because at the time it had the most torque of any four banger. They actually still use them in ARCA racing. Pontiac sold tons of performance versions and parts for the SD4 (Super Duty 4) the top end putting out 330hp. His truck had the 92hp pig. We still joke how that truck "Just sips gas!" lol I would not want it in my Camaro unless a second one was bolted right next to it.
