Question about the behavior of automatic transmissions...
When an automatic transmission is in, say, 5th, and going wide open throttle makes it want to go into 2nd, does it take longer from the transmission to go from 5th to 2nd, than from 4th or 3rd to 2nd?
In a manual, I'd just shift from 5th to 3rd, but I swear it feels like the automatic transmission gets to where I want it to be faster if it's going from 4th to 3rd instead of 5th to 3rd (where I have 5th "locked out" in the 2LS manual mode).

I'm not an expert but I'll take a stab at this anyway. Some shifts only require an action on one clutch pack where others are a clutch to clutch shift and require the coordination of two clutch packs and it's crucial that at no time are two gears selected at the same time so the tranny logic is kind of methodical about it.
My 2012 Chrysler 200 with a 6 speed auto actually has two "4th" gears. One is used only on kick down shifts. Here is an explanation. http://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmissions/62TE.html |
