I have a convertible hardtop on my current car BMW 335.
PROS It is much quieter than a ragtop when up. It stiffens the body structure more than a ragtop. It maintains the look of the hardtop with the Hoffmeister kink. It is safer in a rollover or any accident. CONS It adds 400 lb. altogether in terms of the top, motors and hardware. It is more expensive than a ragtop. Lowering the top messes up the 50/50 balance the car has when the top is up. A ragtop has a classic look that would fit well with the retro '69 look. All in all I would prefer a soft top on the Camaro because I am not buying it to be quiet and refined, I am buying it to be a hairy monster and I don't want to be slowed down by a 400 lb. top either.

If it were an option and didn't cost an arm and a leg, I'd probably go for it. But, don't think it'll happen....too much work to make it and probably won't be enough sales to justify the research.

I'd want the soft top, assuming I can afford it at all.
How much of a difference in the quarter mile would we see based on the weight difference among a hard top convertible, a soft top convertible, and a coupe?

i actually would be willing to deal with the extra weight, i'd love to have a hard top, but it would probably cost too much...the problem is i am having a hard time envisioning the soft top on the new camaro, does anyone have a pic of this or is that some thing im gonna have to wait for closer to time of actual production..

BMW has been advertising .2 of a second difference for the hard top cabrio. Suffice it to say that with 300 lb. ft. of torque at 1500 RPM all the way to 5000 RPM in the BMW twin turbo straight 6, 400 lb. does not take away that much. I can't imagine that with a big V8 it would make more difference than .2 of a second.

Since we don't have real facts, any #'s we put up would be complete guesses. But, I will say, you can pretty much tack on 1/10th of a second for every 100 lbs added to a car....at least in a scenario concerning my 4th Gen. |

to Z or not to Z
|
I would prefer the hard top for the leak'proof' quiet.
I did really love the T-Tops on my 02 Z, it is hard to accept that they can make a convertable but can not make t-tops...

That's why you keep your alarm on and leave the top down. Convertibles are known for having that happen to them since it won't set off the alarm. Just don't keep anything valuable in your car if you leave it on the street.
