rant about oil capacity in the ls3
hello my Camaro brothers and sistas, you guys are awesome.
As Jay Leno says, real car guys change their own oil. So of course I change my own oil religiously on all my cars, same way my dad did. I just want to complain that its redicioulus that the ls3 in my 2012 Ss holds 8 quarts of oil, I just don't get it, maybe someone here can explain to me the justification? my Silverado, even though its a 5.3, only holds 6, I mean this is a truck engine, so why 8qts in the 6.2? |

Longer service intervals? Wont run out of oil for long periods of high rpms? Oil cooler?

You ask why 8qts? Cause that's what it calls for. EOS.

yeah, totally get not starving the engine while racing, 8qts still seems excessive, I'm sure there's an engineer that has the ratios/formulas that justify, either that or gm made a deal with mobile 1 any one know about the capacities in the challenger/mustang, are the comparable?

Well, next time you do the oil change only put in 6 quarts and find out what happens. Im sure that will give you the answer you are seeking for.

Why do they put deep sump oil pans on race cars? GM did you a favor and saved you money in the future by not having to add another oil pan!

My LS1 always took close to 7. So 8 is not that big of a stretch for me. Granted the LS1 I had used a little (no leaks, no blue smoke), but it never starved for oil under load either.
I think it is mostly to keep us from grenading the engine under "spirited" (define as you see fit) driving. |

There isn't much oil at all running through your motor at any given time... the reservoir is a heatsink.

Take advantage of the longer OCI available to you with this large sump and modern synthetic oils. You don't say, but you sound like a "3,000 mile" guy. Use M1 or the syn of your choice, run it down to zero on your OLM, then do a UOA to confirm the quality of the oil at that stage. The LS3 is a low stress engine at only 68.7hp/L so is a good candidate for extended oil change interval, probably no more than once per year.
