Grrr!!!
|
We radio back and forth all the time. CB is the best radar/lazer/airplane/wreck/hot chick/direction detector ever made. But the brake lights of the cars getting tagged is a telling tale also. And the radar detector going off when the birddog 1/2 mile ahead of me is getting tagged helps ALOT. This is where the radar detector has saved my bacon countless times on the highway. If the bird-dog was not up ahead of me, that would be me getting a ticket. That is the golden rule of speeding. Always have a birddog. Even if you are passing them, as long as there is another bird-dog up ahead. You are at reduced risk of an unwarned tagging.
A lone car, on open road, is an easy target for the po-po. And with the economy hitting these little burgs like it is. Tickets are an easy and readly increased source of revenue. And if you dont think the City managers and boards are not pressuring your local Chiefs to up the tempo. You are naive. There are countless little towns that sit the cops out on the highway(which is off a mile or so fron that road) just to get the ticket buck. That to me is the real use of the radar detector. Just to know they are there, like vultures, waiting for a little bite. Most of the highways here, median maggots are a thing of he past with the center divide being 3 foot concrete wall. If you are going to be driving alot of highway miles not in towns. Lower you budget a little, and get a detector and CB. Alot less falses out on the open roads too. So that feature of the high-end ones is nullified. I would have to say the most important thing to do is learn. Most tickets are avioded by being smart. Daydreaming and being mentally lazy is how tickets are gotten. Study up on the intrawebz.

There is a LOT of false information in this thread.... Detectors CAN and DO pick up Laser / Lidar.. Yes the beam is small but it reflects quite a bit as well... I ran radar AND laser for quite a few years before retiring....
Now having said that I will again mention that detecting laser does you no good whatsoever... By the time you detect laser, the officer already has your speed... UNLESS you use shifters... It is proven that shifters do in fact block the laser operator from getting your speed... The key is once you slow down, or confirm your speed to turn the shifters off and allow the laser operator to get a speed reading... K, KA, and X band radar can be detected a great distance.... It can be from a stationary officer a mile ahead targeting another car... K, KA, and X band warning often do save you many times.. Now if you are on a low traffic road and you are the one getting hit 1st, you lose... The radar detector WILL save you if it's activated on another car ahead of you... Depending on the band used, the terrain, and other factors, you could possibly be warned of K, KA, or X a mile away... There is a TON of mis information in this thread.... Educated yourself to what your detector does and does not do... If you are worried about Laser, you need shifters as without them you are naked to laser... My .02 |

I use a detector. Not so much as a warning device but as a mental reminder that big brother is always watching and thus I expect to hear the detector go off on occassion.....no worries though, I'm usually the slowest car in the right lane with the rabbits out front in the left lane being the ones who are actually being pulled over. The detector always seems to inform me in a timely fashion...its too late for them slow down. lol

Have you guys tried trapster? I think its pretty cool since you get a readout on your map with the last known "speeding incident" info at that location before you hit it on a map. I think its far more reliable than a radar detector. All you need is an android phone.

Valentine 1 is the best. I've been using it since 1994. One of my friends didn't believe that my Valentine 1 was better then his Passport 9500 so we mounted both of them in my 550i and went for a drive on the freeway. After 30 mins we finally ran into a CHP that was using his radar and my Valentine 1 picked up the radar at least 6 sec faster then his Passport 9500. Also the Valentine 1 has the arrows to show you which way the radars are coming from. So invest in a Valentine 1 you won't regret it!

I use the Escort solo:
https://www.escortradar.com/store/solo-s2-cordless.html I dislike cords. I lay it on the dash on a no slip pad. Out of sight when passing law officers. Nothing worse than a detector hanging on the windshield for all the world to see.. I use it as a reminder more than anything...not as a speeding tool...however it does help on long trips in Texas with the wide open country and a 3-4 hr drive to most anywhere once on the road... |
