GM sticks me on warranty

I am original owner of a 2012 ZL1 with 5,260 miles and my battery has a crack and leaking acid. The dealer says GM will not warranty the battery as cracked cases is not covered.

My 3yr/36,000 warranty in hand takes no exception. No one can produce a document stating their is a battery clause as I stood at the dealer for 45 minutes waiting for them to produce a policy, they couldn't produce it either.

Upon leaving the dealership I'm handed a bill for $361.28 for a new battery P/N 88864542. I refused to pay until they call the dealer rep, in doing so GM stands behind the fact that in Michigan the cold winter must have frozen the case. I remind them that the car is made in Oshawa Canada (Dealer didn't know told me Mexico) and my car in particular was built Feb 9th and sat in quality hold until April 20th in a frozen parking lot....they don't care. My garage is semi-heated car never seen temps below 20 degrees and on a battery tender.

The other customers whom overheard our conversation were appalled GM was sticking it to me. I just bought a C7 Z51 for my wife 3 weeks ago, nice car but I would have thought differently even over something as petty as this battery issue. My point of view is if their not going to cover a battery, what else do they take special exception. Especially on a 100% stock zero mod car.

Who is your dealer? Graff?

I thought I had the only ZL1 in town. :(

Hope you get some resolution to your problem, I agree, no battery should crack like that from a little cold.

That said, my 2014 warranty states the battery is covered for 12 months, not sure if the 2012 warranty is different. Good luck

I bought the car in Detroit as Graff didn't have allocation in 2012. But they are the service dealer whom states GM won't reimburse them on the battery. I don't blame them its GM polices as the local rep confirmed I'm SOL.

I purchased mine in Detroit also. But I will say, Graff has never done me right for service.

Yeah, They call a guy named Algie whom I've spoke to in the past when ordering my car. So I believe they did make the call, no reason to believe otherwise.

GM replaced the battery in my G8 3 weeks before my 3 year/36000 mile bumper to bumper expired. Granted, it wasn't cracked, just dead but still.

time to upgrade you battery..don't know why anyone would pay so much, while you can get a better AM one for less.

This doesn't make any sense. GM tests cars in much colder climates than Michigan, and I know of no temperature warning regarding the freezing of a car battery under normal conditions.

In fact I can't remember the last time I ever heard of a battery cracking simply due to cold weather in any car.

Now if the battery was being overcharged for some reason, maybe it would crack, but .......

I couldn't agree more, but when they installed the battery $313.28 ($48.00 labor) and its in the car your, kind of captive. The old one is leaking acid all over to the point it will puddle on the ground. I really didn't expect anything but a free replacement after all 3yr/3600 bumper to bumper who would have thought.

Take defective battery and throw it through the window of the dealership.

Dealer claims 2nd one in two weeks. Happened to a car on their lot through a dealer transfer. Graff claims GM wouldn't cover it either.

Don't let 'em get away with that. Call Chevy CS, and start a case. Been there, done that. Its great to know that some things don't change.
