TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) -- General Motors Co. may turn out more of its most popular new models because it underestimated demand for a number of new products that came to market after the company filed to reorganize in June, The Wall Street Journal reported, quoting Vice Chairman Bob Lutz.

GM /quotes/comstock/11i!mtlqq (MTLQQ 0.71, -0.02, -2.86%) had been cautious as it planned production, and its conversations with dealers earlier in the year had led the company to expect demand to be softer than it actually was, the report said. The newspaper quoted a Wisconsin dealer as saying that the hot models are the Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Equinox, Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Camaro. Those models are among the one exceeding GM's forecasts, Lutz said

General Motors Co. dealers are pushing the car maker to boost availability of some of its hottest-selling models, forcing the company to reconsider production plans for 2009.

GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said Tuesday the car maker underestimated demand for a slate of new products that hit the market after its bankruptcy filing in June. The miscalculation was due primarily to the fact GM aimed to be overly cautious as it planned production volumes, and because its conversations with dealers earlier in the year led the company to expect softer demand than GM has seen in recent weeks.

Not so simple. Camaro sales have a proven ability to tank after the first couple of model years. They don't want to end up hiring additional workers that they can't use a year later.

If they could fire workers at will, they'd have added a shift a while back. But they can't.

Proven ability is this area, to. They'll probably delay adding a shift, then add one just as demand tails off.

Originally they projected 80 - 100K. Current projections for the 2010 model year are as high as 120K

They are attempting to build as many camaros as possible without putting on a 2nd shift. The only way they will put a second shift on is if they put a second model on the flex line.
