Thank you! I'm trying to learn how to adjust and use different camera settings, and use 'auto' less often.

Lonestar what kind of camera do you have?

What were the settings you used for the top photo. Love that look.

I just got a new Canon t3i and I am trying to learn how to use settings for effect too.

thanks for any tips you may have to offer.

I have a new Canon T2i. So far I had been using auto to take pics, but I lost details in the background using the flash at night.

For night shots, you'll want a low ISO, exposure time of a few seconds (longer if it's darker outside), and adjust the aperture depending on how you want the depth of field.

So I adjusted the settings and used this for those two pics:
Set the Camera to "A-DEP"
ISO 800
F-stop f/3.5
Exposure time 3.2 seconds
Focal length 21 mmm

In these shots, I set the camera to "A-DEP" and adjusted the ISO to 800, only. All the other parameters were set by the camera. Using a sturdy tripod is a must for the long exposure time. For the shallow depth of field, I used a photo editor, but the depth of field can be adjusted by controlling the F-stop (the F number on the Canon); I just didn't know it last night.

Here's the photo I like the best from the photoshoot. I didn't originally post it here because it doesn't show IOM as well.

Camera set to "A-DEP"
ISO 200
F-stop f/3.5
Exposure time 6 seconds
Focal length 21mm

Hope this helps!

It does help thank -you. I know enough about photography to be dangerous. I just have not done much experimenting with my new camara since I just recently got it. Time for me to go do some night shots, maybe tonight. Grab the tri-pod and find a good location.

Thanks again.
