Sounds like it was a respray to me. I mean, don't get me wrong the factory paint isn't above flaw, as mine has fisheyes in several spots throughout the car, but something like that screams of a respray. Try looking along the panel to see if you can find other signs that it might be a respray such as orange peel, wetsand marks, or dust nibs.
