Yeah, GTR definetly out of ZL1's league (can't believe I'm saying this ). Fastest times between the 2 have at least a 20 sec. difference, plus the GTR weighs 3800 lbs compared to the ZL1, about 4000 lbs. Yikes!! BUT one thing that the ZL1 beats the GTR on is price: GTR about $90,000, ZL1, about $60,000. Gotta give a little respect to the GTR

Ya, awd is a huge benefit for the gtr. Sounds like top gear would have some interesting possibilities for comparison. If the ZL1 can hang with a GTR or other 100k $ cars it's a success. The ZL1 is poised to be a 55k $ super car or at least it will get you into that territory.

Yeah gtr all the way, I've seen these things on road courses and they are so fast and very forgiving. Seamless shifts with zero drivetrain loss make it very very quick rowing up the gears.
But, let's rephrase the question. If you had the means to get a gtr would you? Or would it still be a zl1? |

Here's an interesting thread from the CTS-V forum that includes a couple of vids with a forum member's modified V, his brother's 2012 GTR and a Veyron thrown in, just for fun!

2013 GT-R.....0-60 2.72 (only car faster is the Veyron) 1/4 mile 10.8
No matter if Michael Schumacher or your favorite Grandma is behind the wheel. So no, the ZL1 doesn't stand a chance. But neither does much of anything else. It's one hell of a performance car,but very, very boring while doing so. I like to think I have something to do with how my car performs. Be it good or bad. |

Don't underestimate the GT-R's ability to transmit power to the pavement with AWD. Even in the rain, that sucker hooks up like you would not believe. My '98 VR-4 equipped with AWD/AWS, 6 speed Getrag & twin intercooled turbos launches off the line with virtually no wheelspin & just flat keeps on pulling to a top end of about 170mph or so. I just sold the Mitsubishi to RK Motors & I'm missing it, big time; it would get 26mpg in 6th gear @ 70mph.
I had seriously considered an all Black, Black Limited Edition 2012 GT-R & a Super Silver, but real world roads give it a fit. The less than 9° approach angle made garaging the beast an impossibility. My driveway slope is 10° & there's no way I'm parking a $100K automobile on the street. Speed bumps are another obstacle that you are likely to encounter. GODZILLA'S forward spoiler is part of the chassis, so a complete redesign of the car would be in order to make it happen for me. There is a way to compensate; Umbrella Auto Design has a VRH/Variable Ride Height suspension system utilizing KW adjustable coil overs & air shocks that can be manipulated via two dash mounted toggle switches on command (via a small air compressor) to give the GT-R another 2.75" of clearance. Unfortunately, that voids the NISSAN factory warranty. It also bypasses the console mounted factory ride settings... meh! A friend bought the Black GT-R I had considered purchasing & attempted to scale my driveway; stopped short of bottoming out. Dealers are just a tad reluctant to put on any miles for "demos" to test such theories. The GT-R is more suited for the track than the street & owners, you can bet, are white knuckling scenarios like streets being prepped for asphalt paving & such. I figure, scaling off of a good profile shot of the ZL1, that the approach angle will be about the same as my VR-4, allowing me to drive it on typical roadways without all the unnecessary drama. |

The fellow who bought the GT-R, Ryan, gave me the proverbial "spin-around-the-block" that the NISSAN dealer doesn't offer to potential buyers. Cornering was phenomenal & acceleration was mind blowing. He had achieved enough miles of break-in to try the computerized Launch Control for the 1st time. Flip the switches, plant foot on the brake & rev to 4000rpm or so... as you release the brake, you hammer the accelerator & INSTANTLY, OFF YOU GO! It's a PERFECT launch everytime & it feels like you're sitting on the shoulder of the highway when a semi-tractor trailer truck wanders over & smacks you in the rear. Yeah, it's BRUTAL!

The GT-R is a good deal better looking in person. In ALL BLACK... it's outstanding! Super Silver Metallic, a $3K option, ain't too shabby either, IMHO. It's a matter of taste; it grows on you...

I concur, the GTR does look better in person - for me creates a "gotta have it" emotional response that many of my fav cars do. Having said that, I would rather have a ZL1 if I could afford it. The GTR was announced as this "everyman" type of super car when in reality, it is way way more pricey than that and really fits more in line with the ZR1. The ZL1 (when the hype dies down and the dolts who pay the dealer markups are gone), will be a much more financially realistic type of "everyman" near super car. Also, just wouldn't ever be able to buy a Nissan, I'm GM/Chevy branded till I die!

They sound horrible though. The looks miss me too. At the last OSU home game dude had a ZR1 about 3 spots away from a GTR. No comparison in sound if you are V8 guy like I am.
the 2012's perform just awesome though. cost of ownership is high. I have heard trannies are like 20-25k. I don't own one and that is hearsay info but if that is true it is not a car for a hilbilly like me. It is one of the reason the car perfoms well but that is a huge cost item. I drive cars too gentle and sometimes because of my gentle driving habbits trannies break.
