ZL1 GG tax, but 13 GT500 no?

I realize our great car does get nailed with the GG tax, as they are actually being built and sold with the GG tax as we speak, but help me understand and confirm that the 13 GT500 that makes more HP, runs faster 0 to 60 and has a top speed of 200 mph doesnt have a GG tax. Does it have something to do with the US gov/tax payer help for GM? I hope I dont sound too stupid on the subject, someone clue me in please. All I hear and read is that the ZL1 gets the GG tax, and the yet to be produced to the public 13 ford doesnt.

its all about mileage. The zl1 has a larger engine wider tires and is heavier and has more aggressive gearing all which contribute to less mileage. I think they compute it by averaging the highway and city mileage.

I dont think its ALL because the weight though cuz doesnt the ZR1 get hit by GG tax as well??

ZL1 estimated combined mpg 17 (13-14 city 18-19 hwy) based off of cts v GT500 will barely have 22.5 combined (15-16 city 22-23 hwy) based off 12 gt500 McLaren MP4-12C Avoids Gas-Guzzler Tax also with 15 city 22 hwy

The ZL1 gets the GG tax because it does not meet the federal fuel economy standard of 22.5 mpg (average of city and highway mileage combined).

Remind me again what part of the US Constitution authorizes this.

My 2010 4x4 truck gets 13 mpg average and is exempt from the GG tax as are SUV's and Minivans. Remind me again what the idiots in government are trying to accomplish with this tax? I think its just a give us your money for no good reason tax. They probably blow the money on crap like the Solyndra fiasco.

@Coolidge,
There was a time when pickup trucks and SUVs were a niche vehicle and used mainly for work purposes. They sold in small enough numbers that it almost didn't matter what their fuel economy was as nobody expected a work vehicle to get good mileage or to spend much time tooling around town. They spent most of their miles out in the country and on farms.

Fast forward to the 80s and 90s when American auto manufacturers all but abandoned RWD cars (much less V8 RWD cars.) People started to notice "Hey! I can get a pickup/SUV with a V8 and RWD and it's dirt cheap!" All of a sudden there was a glut of gas swilling trucks and SUVs being bought en masse.

The feds never updated the MPG standards for those vehicles, but manufacturers sure noticed the sales spike. So instead of going back to offering V8 RWD cars, they just started pimping out trucks and charged accordingly. For quite a while, you could buy a truck that was way nicer and more expensive than an American luxury car. The F150 King Ranch and Lariot both come to mind. Those things were nicer than anything coming out of Lincoln's doors and cost more, to boot.

Anyways, I strayed there, but basically truck/SUV standards have never been reevaluated. That's why they are exempt from GG tax.

Can we keep politics out of this. In fact, I'm almost certain we have discussed this multiple times.

To say that something is incorrect without backing up those claims with different evidence comes across as condescending. If you have nothing to contribute, then say nothing. I for one am interested in this topic.

Basing truck sales off of the loss of RWD cars doesn't make sense to me I guess. I will re-edit what I actually meant.. Better? I changed my comment.

Besides, i did a search for this subject. It's been discussed. I should have just closed this thing, but I'll let it ride since the GT500 doesn't have it's own thread about it. I still think it should be in the Other cars forum though since it's mainly supposed to be about the GT500.

The Corvette ZR1 does have the GG tax included in MSRP. The Challenger SRT8 392 gets a $1K GG tax and the ZL1 gets taxed. I'm not sure how the Shelby escapes it but I'm sure the numbers must have worked in its favour.
