Any manual Verts with 3.91's?
Hi,
I've expressed my displeasure with the off-the-line performance of my 2011ss from day one. At first I chocked it up to being new with manual trans but now that I've concurred that, i'm pretty sure it's the weight of the Vert giving me grief. In short, I find the first 60' or so to be a rather bogged down take-off even if I slip the clutch to keep the rpm's up. Once the car speed increases, she takes off real good though. This motor appears to prefer the higher rpms but I don't see the coupe guys complaining about off the line starts as much as I am. So it leads me to believe that the couple extra hundred pounds in the vert makes thing a lot worse. So, I've been pondering the 3.91's and the mechanical advantage. Before plunking down a bunch of cash to do this, I'd like to hear from some other vert owners who went to the 3.91's to be sure it will overcome that bogged down feeling off the line. Please describe every aspect of driving feel you can with the gears (both off the line and general driving). If the gears solve my displeasure I will be entirely happy with this car. I guess I should drive a coupe if I get the chance to see the difference as well. thanks, J |

Ah, come on! That's not possible. The thing is a pig and definitely takes a good 60' before there's enough momentum and the rpms climb up to the powerband. So I'm hoping the gears get in to that powerband quicker so it can pull sooner. Don't get me wrong. I can lite em up if I want to but once they hook up the rpm's plummet until she gains enough speed. I've tried slipping the clutch more to try and stay on the edge of wheel spin and power to the ground but it's still not pullin hard til the rpms climb over 3 grand. I'm tuned and all torque management is removed. J |

Supercharge it and you'll see a huge difference. I've had 4:11 's and it was fun but just spun every time I hit the gas. Back to stock gears and I'm happy with it .

I had a modded 02 z28 about 10 years ago before I got back into dirt bike ridding and sold it, well fast forward to today and now I have a 2011 ss vert, compared to my 02 the 2011 feels and is super slow plus it doesnt feel like it has any pull till the upper rpms, so to answer your question gears will help you some, but for me I figured it needed alot more help than that since lets be honest 4200 lbs is alot of weight to get going, so that is why I decided to go with the twins from agp, but any fi would get your car going but it will cost alot more

One other thing if you do gears in order to get the most out of it I would recommend doing suspension upgrades as well if you don't already

I love mine. I haven't found any issues. I put headers on at the same time and only had to tune it once. You will need a tune so your speed is correct.

Mods are in my sig. I don't start to get traction until I grab third...and even then, I'm still spinning. I also just bought some BBK shorty headers for it that I'll put on in the Spring. Is your LS3 completely stock?

Yeah, i'm mostly stock. I've got a vararam intake and custom tune. That's it. I run only 91 octane cuz that's all I can find most of the time. I don't want to put a lot more into the car cost wise. I figured if the gears just get me off the line a bit quicker I'll be 100% happy with it. I know you're all gonna think I'm crazy, but my dodge minivan with the 6sp trans and the pentastar gets off the line way quicker and it surely weight as much as the Camaro. I can load the van up with a ton of stuff and it just pulls away like it's empty. Not sure what gear ratios it has but whatever they did works really well. On the Camaro, I don't want to change the main gearbox so I hope the money I spend on the 3.91's will do it.

I'm with Jasper on this. I have a tvs2300 on my vert, plenty of jam now but first gear is way too tall on these cars. I think we could all benefit from lower gears in the rear.
Stock is fine while cruising but 3rd gear will get you 100 mph for cripes sake.

4.10s here...no issues with off the line performance here ! I love the gearing now. (The 463 RWHP helps too )
