E85 results
Hey guys,
I, along with many of you, are patiently waiting for Squash to release their 'new' returnless fuel pump. Assuming that it finally comes out relatively soon, I wanted to know what kind of HP bump that I should expect from the conversion of E85 alone. I understand that the 105 octane allows me to create more boost, but what can I expect if I stay at my current psi level of 9.5? I'm not convinced that I want to keep adding more boost and I want to see if waiting for this pump even makes sense if I'm going to stay at my current psi level? Thoughts. Thanks!

~40rwhp
You get to add timing from the octane but you also get a cooling effect.

That's kinda what I thought. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Thanks

Depending on the quality of the E85 you will be adding ~10* of timing over 93 pump tune.

If youre not far, its basically 1.50 race fuel, at the cost of some mpg. Its amazing imo. Does anyone have a write up on what's needed for our systems to handle e85? Or can it already? Typically the only issue with e85 is that itll eat up your fuel setup if its not designed to handle heavy ethanol setups (theres typically a big fuel system difference between flex fuel type and non flex fuel systems).
Lots of good information here: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/E85 Read through octane and performance and similar

I wonder what needs to be replaced to be safe running it for a long time.
Fuel pump,injectors,supply/return lines? Am I missing anything? |

That sounds right to me, but im not sure. Havent dove into the fuel systems on these cars yet. It would be smart for a performance shop to make an e85 kit... Hell thousands have been spent to gain 15-30hp from intake pr head work, why not pay the same for guaranteed gains. *hint**hint* if bo believes 40whp is capable then itd be worth the investment

VP makes a version they call M85, more performance designed and consistent octane.
I wouldn't trust pump E85 on a boosted motor with the timing cranked way up unless testing the fuel and knowing what the quality is. That pump E85 stuff varies widely. |

I wouldn't mess with it myself. I'd stick with 93 and the occasional race gas. Stick some racing unleaded in it and create a dyno tune for that fuel. Then whenever needing that 20 - 40 more hp.... stick some race gas and that race gas tune in it. Rest of the time you'll be cruising on 93.

The flex fuel file in the E38 computer monitors the content of the fuel once it's activated in the tune and will adjust according to the quantity of ethanol in the fuel.

Bo are you saying the computer in the 2010+ cars has an option to be activated to pull timing based on the fuel? Is there something that needs to go along side with this like a flex fuel sensor or is it all in places just needs to be activated???

Correct. It's just one wire that you pin into the ecu connector from the flex fuel sensor and go into the tune and cut that feature on.

You can use the flex fuel maps for either flex fuel, or you could even wire in a dial and have adjust a timing on a dial, something like 0-5 degrees. Many ways to use the flex fuel options.
