Protecting stainless steel finish
Got a Magnaflow axle back with a mirror-like stainless steel finish on the mufflers and exhaust tips; looks great, for now...
What is the best way to try to protect that finish, besides just keeping it as clean as possible?

The heat alone is going to make it hard for anything like a sealant to last for long. I'm not 100% on how the high heat would impact the longevity of a coating either (someone else might be able to chime in)
But like you mentioned, the biggest thing - keep it clean. Letting dirt, grime, moisture, soot, etc to sit on the surface will lead to a diminished appearance over time.

Probably your best chance of keeping it looking good would be http://www.amazon.com/Weiman-Stainle...l+wipes+weiman , http://www.amazon.com/Weiman-92-Stai...l+wipes+weiman .

The thing is, and its even noticeable on our range, is the cleaner isn't much more than a light oil and a little wax. If I use it to clean around the burners on our range, the next time I cook the heat evaporates it from the stainless and leaves a very clear/distinct ring. I imagine the lack of heat resistance would be just as noticeable on an exhaust system - then add to the fact its exposed to the elements (unlike your fridge) and its not going to do much for every long.

stainless steel is stainless steel all the way to the bone, meaning it will turn color, usually yellow, but can be polished back to original..theres nothing you can do to prevent the discoloring..short of not running the car.

Polish it every once in awhile. Any standard aluminum polish will work on them. Mother's brand is what I personally use for my exhaust tips.

Antique car restorers love stainless steel. 50-60-70 years later nothing happens to it that
buffing/polishing will not correct. Of course dents don't count, but even those can bumped out.
