Backfiring

My 2002 z28 has been back firing and running rough.

I am talking the car to a good friend of mine who works on our cars. He is gonna start with a tune up and new o2 sensors. To see if that helps.

I have tried changing the fuel i put in the car, but she still back fires. It is running rough. When the car back fires or gets really sluggish.

Any ideas?

Could it be spark plugs perhaps?

Plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter. I'd start with all the simple stuff. Is it throwing any codes?

plugs/wires. fuel filter is a good idea but that wouldnt cause the backfire. crank sensor can also cause the timing to be off which can cause the rough idle and backfires.

Lol true, I was responding tot he rough idle part didn't really include the backfire. Does it always happen in the cold? My TA when I first got it idled horrible when it got cold. Turned out the intake manifold wasn't torqued correctly.

I am gonna start with simple repairs. Tune up, change the front o2 sensors. The car is throwing a code, but it is for the front o2.

She runs rough and back fires all the time. Especially if i am on the throttle. Lots of hesitation and when it does back fire the car does not want to accelerate.

I have a friend who had the same condition and it was the O2 sensor. Good luck.

Thanks. I am thinking that it is the sensors. Been having trouble with them since they got "replacex".

Everything went really well my friends shop. He did the plugs and welding. The O2's checked out fine so he didnt replace them. Apparently the plugs were changed, but the idiot that did the work put the wrong ones in and didnt use anti-seize so they were really difficult to get out. #8 didnt even have the wire hooked up. It had pooped off.

He found a rusty socket lodged in the sub frames and that was causing a lot of the rattling. He wants to do some work to the exhaust system...tuck everything up under the car and make it look neater. So might have him do that in early march when I go out of town.

I have a exhaust leak in the driver side header. There is either a bolt missing or it broke off half way in. It leaks a little and is causing the hissing noise.

Other than that she runs SO much better. No more rough idle and lurching and no more back firing
