My car is due here tomorrow but...

According to my dealer, they are due to get my car tomorrow. Cool right? Well, until I saw in the paper today that about 15 miles away from where they unload the cars at the train station here (cottage grove, mn), Union Pacific had train derailment today. It would be my luck that my car was on it... but thankfully they were all empty. However, now there are nineteen rail cars off the tracks and a couple turned over. I am assuming these are the tracks my car would have to go through since it's so close and they go right to cottage grove. So I am thinking my car may be delayed. :( How long does it take to clear a derailment? Here are some pics.

That sucks and sorry it's going to be delayed. I would have to take a guess but it would depend if all cars are empty. Best case a couple days and depends how bad they need the tracks for other shipments.

I'm no expert or anything close but it takes time and the rails will have to be inspected as well.

Its probably going to be a week or so at best.

These things are fairly few and far between I'm guessing:

Of course you might get lucky and they call in a local crane to start clearing the mess until a rail crane and crew can get there.

Of course, you should probably read the disclaimer in my sig line about now...

Man, I think you are just so excited about getting your car, that you became paranoid...
Look, there's snow falling! It's gonna be late.
Look, transport plane crashed in Turkmenistan, maybe my Camaro was in it?

Haha maybe I am paranoid... but I am so tired of waiting!!! The dealer said that they usually come in a few days late. Maybe they ship the cars to MN the other way, like across canada and then south into Minnesota. Or maybe they can bypass the derailment, I don't know, I just want my car!

I don't know how far your dealer is from the rail yard but if they are expecting to see your car at the lot tomorrow this derailment probably has no bearing on your delivery.
Your car is either sitting in the rail yard already or on a truck somewhere between the rail yard and the dealers lot.
To my knowledge, cars do not get offloaded from the train and put directly on trucks, they usually sit for days waiting for the trucks to be loaded.

Your going to make some calls? You work for Union Pacific or something? The train cars were all empty, so my car isn't in danger, but I don't know where it's at.

It's about an hour drive from the rail yard to my dealer, but thanks for the info, I wasn't aware of that.

Which dealer did you use?

Keep in mind that the train yard is quite a big one and has a ton of tracks routing in/out. They'd likely reroute because they can't afford to lose a lot of track time. There was a derail down here in walnut grove last year and they had it cleaned up fast.

my car was shipped to a railyard not even close to my dealer and put on a car carrier the day after it arrived to the yard. If the OP has the rail car number he can find out exactly where it is. I tracked mine from the time it left Oshawa to the time it hit the rail yard.

Just last week I had a UPS package that happened to be on a train that derailed in Montana. I absolutely freaked out since I was shipping glass lenses and had a tight deadline to meet, but thankfully although it got held up a few days there, it miraculously made it on time on its scheduled delivery date. Hope you have the same luck as I did and the mess is quickly cleaned up!!
