Angry 3 week old car in shop overnight already!?!

After having my new 2011 1LT for 2 weeks my check engine light came on. Took it in, the service department insisted it was due to not tightening the gas cap, but I was 99% sure the light came on a day or two after gassing up. Anyway, though this issue was resolved but lo and behold a week later the check engine light was on again. It had been 3 days since I gassed up so this gas cap story was a bunch of bunk and I told the service manager as much. So now my brand new Camaro, which I traded in a perfectly fine running Toyota SUV for, is stuck in the service dept. overnight while they try to figure it out. Seriously? 3 weeks and major issues already? This is unacceptable. In the meantime I'm relegated to driving a rental pick up truck. Ridiculous!

It shouldn't be difficult to figure out the problem. Whenever the CEL comes on, a code (or codes) is generated that refer to the issue. Gas cap tightening usually gives a code that has to do with air:fuel.

It doesn't hurt to take it to a local body shop chain, typically they'll scan it for you and tell you what the code is for free. My local Autozone does this. Most dealerships will charge you if it's the gas cap after the first time.

See what they find. Very well be very minor. This happens to every manufacturer. I had mine in shop wothin first week for a leaking reverse light. I would not sweat it yet.

your reverse light fluid was low?. OP- this happens all the time to mass produced things. Unfortunatly your number was up.

Hah. Should have been clearer. It leaked and filled with water after first rain a few days after bringing home. But it has been serviced for leaking blinker fluid a few times lol.

Well thank god you're not stuck with a lifeless Toyota SUV and you've got a Camaro (running or not) instead!

You need to invest a little brain power into this and figure out what code registered when the CEL illuminated. Simply That way you can determine where the issue is and press for resolution.

The dealer might have been correct from the 1st diagnosis and assumed a simple twist/lock the cap will fix the CEL issue. After all, they have the tool to read the code and they took the first corrective step. It happened again and if it's the same trouble code, perhaps the cap is defective and not sealing properly or something else upstream needs checking. Either way, they are fixing it for you and provided you with a vehicle to drive. Patience young grasshoppa, nothing is perfect in this world.

Oh I knew what you meant. It just reminded me of blinker fluid jokes.

You should have tried hitting the OnStar button and asked the advisor what the code was. Usually they can read it.

Did you create the same previous issue by not tightening the fuel cap again and it loosening up over the three days afterwards to the point it set the code again?

was it code P0442 or P0443? I know a lot of times those codes read gas cap defective but it could also mean you have an EVAP problem too.

Look, unless it's an anvil, stuff breaks, Toyota makes it, VW makes it, GM makes it, ford makes it, it breaks, no one is immune, that's why there's a little thing called a "warranty", and GM backs theirs pretty well.

You're fortunate enough to have a new Camaro, there are many out there who are looking for jobs in this economy trying to find a way to pay their mortgage, feed their families, put gas in the 20 year-old car with no warranty, count your blessings.

We love our cars, we know they break, we break them, they break on their own, stuff happens, take a deep breath and remember, will it really matter this time next year?

Generally, the code that gets triggered in the first few weeks is a low windshield wiper reservoir fluid level.
