Passed a 1984 Z28 for sale today.

We were driving around today and spotted a 1984 Camaro Z28 in really good shape. We stopped in and I chatted with the salesman. It has 87,000 miles, and they are asking $6,000. Unfortunately, I can not find that year on kbb and am not sure what it would be worth.

What do you guys think?

Thanks,

ED

KBB/Bluebook/etc. no longer really apply to these cars. The bad examples bottomed out lower than "book" and the pristine examples are higher.

Strange to think of 84 as classic.

Thanks for the help.

Unless it's in immaculant shape, that is WAY too much.

Drove back to the dealer today to see it again, and someone was taking it our for a test ride. I turned around and followed them until they turned into a local mechanics driveway.

When he floored it there was a huge cloud of black smoke, followed by a slight hint of oil. Figure it was just running really rich and being 26 years old, maybe the oil seals let some oil leak by when it was sitting.

It does not look like we will be getting this one, but maybe someday we will find another 80's Camaro in decent shape that will be there when we go back for it.

They posted the Z28 on their website today, and included a vehicle history report. Turns out the car had a rebuilt/rebuildable CT title in 1993. It does not list any accidents so we assume it was flood damage.

I was going to run a carfax on it, but can't see paying $30.00 for a report that might give us the same info the dealer posted.

Decided to go tomorrow and take it for a test drive.

If we end up getting this car, I will only need to buy a 1st and 2nd gen to say I have owned each one .

Black smoke=carbon build up in exhaust. No big deal. Oil is blue smoke and smells. My 89 puffs a bit of blue at start up from valve blow by. Just worn out seals. Not a major deal but not great either.

$6000 for an 84 Z is high. I gave $5000 for my car. 84,000 miles 350tpi IROC

I got a much closer look.

It does not idle until it is warmed up, could just be the choke.

Blue constant smoke, with puffs of black when you rev it.

Radiator was over full with coolant that looked clean, but the overflow bottle had very dirty coolant.

You could see past body work with bondo on the passenger side quarter(accident?)

Bubbles on down the passenger side.

Leaking from the intake, valve covers, oil pan and other places.

Rear muffler hanger needs to be replaced.

Brakes go to the floor and very spongy.

I offered 3k, but they wanted to be closer to 5k.

I can't see spending 5k on something that needs that much work.

O well I will keep my eye out for another one.
