Rear end gear break in ????
We are trying to decide on doing the 391 gear swap in our car. Gonna send it off and have cam and gears done at same time. The shop i am using is going to just replace the rear end with a new unit loaded with the 391's. my question is do you have to do the whole break in thing of several heat cycles with a built unit like i have read others do when they have just replaced the gears?? Any help or info would be appreciated. The shop we are using is 500 miles from home and if i have to kill off 2-3 days breaking in my mew gears i may decide to just do the cam. Thanks.

Lingenfelter put new 3.70 in mine and I drove it 600 miles home with no issues. They did say to try and not stay at one speed for too long, and not very high speeds to begin with, but I thought that was more for the engine (Which was forged internally amongst other items).
The shop doing the work should be able to answer your question.

Actually, break in is more for the gears than for the engine. Vary speed and stay away from WOT for the break in period.

Vary the speed so one part doesnt get worn more than the other. No cruise control

I read about a whole involved procedure, but it seemed like overkill. The shop that installed mine just said go easy on her for a little while. That's what I did, and I haven't had any problems. The real hard part is resisting the urge to smash that go pedal!

You definitely want to break in those gears properly...Then manufacturer website should have step by step instructions...You'll want to turn the radio off and listen for noises as well.

I'm not sure why there's such an elaborate procedure for breaking in gears. The car comes from the factory with brand new gears, right? You don't have to follow any special procedures when leaving the car lot, except the usual break-in stuff.
I found this in an old thread: Quote:
I'm not an expert on this, but I didn't follow this procedure, and my gears are peachy.

Here's some good info on the importance of breaking in new gears:
http://www.ringpinion.com/technicalh...r_Break-In.inc I know it specifies trucks but the reason for break in is the same

Took my 1le gears somewhat easy first 500 miles. I slam on them all the time now. No whine, just great acceleration.

Did you break in the factory gears? If they are set up properly, don't worry and drive it.

1LE 391 gears
I had the 1LE gears installed from a friend who does truck gears. I installed a JRE posi upgrade kit with billet end caps. After 100 miles I pushed it hard in the first three gears and the rear sounds great with no noise and no problems.
