Octane Booster?
Where I live, there are only a couple gas stations that offer 92 octane. Most offer only 91, and none (that I've found) offer 93 or above. I was curious as to if I should add an octane booster, like the STP Octane Booster I found at Walmart for like $5 per tank. Is this worth looking in to? or is 92 perfectly fine?

92 is fine, but octane booster is fun to use anyways. I know its $$, but it does GREAT things for your engine.

Try the same thing with this pair's predecessors of 1970 or so and you'll find yourself in a bit of a wrestling match. Ain't progress wonderful? Maybe yes, and maybe sometimes it's fun to wrestle."

Octane booster is a waste of money. Most as Twin said wont even raise a tank of gas 1 point and some actually hurt the octane rating. Dont waste your money on that crap. If you want more octane buy some av gas, or race gas and mix it in with a tank of what you get normally and raise your octane that way.

Octane booster works if you buy the right stuff.

Xcelacorp-Octanium
We have done back to back dyno testing and have shown direct improvement s with the product we tested.
Octanium by Xcelacorp In 2006, a team of leading automotive tuners, drivers, and scientists came together with a single goal: create the world’s most powerful octane booster for gasoline powered, high-performance vehicles. After countless hours in the lab and on the dyno, a powerful new formula emerged: Octanium! No other major brand additive can match Octanium for true, measurable increases in gasoline octane.* Using Octanium can raise 93-octane pump gasoline to nearly 100-octane; dramatically more than any other octane additive!* The proprietary blend of ingredients in Octanium is designed to eliminate detonation and pre-ignition by stabilizing and modifying the burn rate of gasoline and increasing the autoignition temperature of the air/fuel mixture. Octanium is the ideal product for high performance factory or custom engines that require the chemical properties of a race fuel to achieve maximum power and reliability. Octanium works great with high-compression normally aspirated engines and supercharged, turbocharged, and nitrous assisted engines. Whatever you drive, Octanium helps your car, truck, SUV, motorcycle, or watercraft run at peak engine performance. *Independent laboratory results at the time of original formulation. We sell cases of this stuff to many people online as well as whosale dealers. It is great stuff and I will continue to use and sell it with confidence. My .02 Andy www.admperformance.com |

AvGas for Octane Boost
Just be careful with AVGAS. Although it's 100 Low Lead. It's not Unleaded. Aviation piston engines still need lead for lubrication of the valve seats. The avgas was lowered to low lead when all of the cars in the 70's were switched to unleaded. Don't run Low Lead in your new car. You'll be visiting the dealer and have an expensive repair bill. But it's still okay to run in 1st Gen Camaros, they don't have any sensors or cats.
You may ask, How I know this? 24 years in the military, 23 of it in Aviation.

The data was from 3 years ago when we became a dealer for the stuff. They sent us samples to evaluate, wanted to make sure it was real....No smoke and mirrors . We aquired data on an untuned car(2004 corvette) recognizing small amounts of knock retard,we saved the data in hptuners scanner format at the time. Then we drained the tank,Put 10 gallons of 93 mixed with the proper ratio octanium per the manufacturer for 100 octane.Ran the car for 5 minutes on the dyno to insure proper fuel in the lines. The results were the same but with no hint of detonation. Then we added spark in 1 degree increments until we reached knock. If you have been around tuning ls engines you know that adding additional timing can make a substantial difference in the output versus leaning out the car. In the end we net 11 rwhp and 12 rwtq with no knock. This was tuned and this was optimized for both street and dyno(No super lean high timing mixture) For 2010 Camaro owners we may do the same to show that it does truly work.If you feel the need to gather more results please contact some of the vendors that sell it....You will find the same results! I use to you 100 octane in my turbo WRX so I could safely turn up the boost a little.
But I've been told, you really don't get much of a benifit if the car isn't tuned for the higher octane? So I really don't know. |

Ok, so I know this is somewhat off topic, but my friend was telling me that a 50/50 mix of methanol and water injected into the motor has the same effect of increasing octane. (making 91 octane act as 115+ octane)
is this true? I'm not the most knowledgeable person in the world regarding these matters, so I figured you guys would be better to ask. |
