Riding the clutch like a playboy bunny rides an eligible bachelor...

I am new to stick shifting (got a stick 1LE two weeks ago) and every single damn time I get out of the car I can smell the clutch.

So my question is:

Once I feel the clutch "engage" how quickly do you release the clutch? Do you ease it out over 2-3 seconds or you throttle up and "drop" the clutch quickly.

I think my problem is that I release the clutch too slowly.

The clutches on new Camaros will give off the smell at first. Mine stank for about the first 1,000 miles or so, and I haven't smelled it since. It's the "newness" getting burned off. Give it a little time and it will stop smelling.

But to answer your question 2-3 seconds may be a bit on the long time, 2 seconds ok from a stop but counting 3 steamboats is getting a little long.

ITs all about feel, it will take some time to get the release point perfectly. Once you have than, you wont burn the clutch. Ive had 8 different manual cars and they all released differently. It took me a few weeks on each to perfect the release point.

Also, my camaro smelled badly even with good shifting for about 1600-1800 miles. So if its new, it gonna be worse.

I wouldnt say 2-3 seconds. Thats a bit too long. Probably 1-1.5 seconds ideal. Its a matter of feel. WHen youre comfy, you wotn think about the time it takes to shift. You just shift it. You can try reving the RPMs to match the shift ( which Ive not tried that much) to make it smoother. The 1-3-5-6 approach works well to simply cruise and you have ample torque to get you well on your way. If youre playing around, you want to row through them all to get the best bang for you throttle...

Once it goes into or out of each gear you shift immediately take your foot off.

Agree with all in here. This is my first manual as well. (Not my first time driving one, more like my first time owning one) My clutch smelled for the first 2k, and quite possibly was the stiffest clutch I have ever encountered. Just took her out of storage last week with 2500 miles on the clock. No smells, and it shifts smoother than ever. Just needed broke in I guess.

Once I feel mine start to catch, I get off pretty quick. The 3.91s are pretty forgiving.

Depends on how fast your excerating from a stop. After taking off, it's in - shift - release.

mine smelled sooooooo bad... I drove up to my dads house and he started harping on me about riding the clutch... I tried to tell him it wasn't me it was the NEW clutch... he didn't think about that part... but we went to breakfast and he was in the car and saw or smelled first hand that it was the clutch not the driver in my case!

I agree with your clutch explanation, but you do realize that due to the changes in our transmission (1LE), the final drive for first gear is almost identical (10.38:1 in an SS, 10.40:1 in a 1LE), so the 3.91 gears have no effect on it.

Like others have said, you are probably letting out the clutch a bit too slow. I would just practice on letting off faster. You'll know when you let off too quick! Just keep playing around with it and you'll get the feel. It takes a while to master a clutch in general, and every car is a bit different. Your first clutch may have a bit shorter life expectancy, but hey it's a wear item.

very interesting that i found this thread. I too just purchased a 1LE. I got it last week. Although I have driven manual my whole life. I have never driven anything else. But I too have this horrible clutch smell. I came on here to find out if anyone was having this problem. So I am gathering this is a normal smell for the first 1000 miles or so?! this is great news if this is true. I was getting worried sick because i know its not me and getting on the car for 1 hard pull wouldn't mess up the car. I have 380 miles on it and prob will take a ton to burn out the clutch. So everything says this is a normal smell on the v8s? or 1LEs at least??

My 1LE is my first stick, and it does take some getting used too. But after the 1st 1000 miles or so you get used to it and pretty good at regular shifting. As for clutch smell, mines stop around 1500miles or so. I've got 2100 on her now and no smell whatsoever.
