In the market for a Z/28
Hey guys I'm currently in the market for a 2014-2015 Z/28 just have a few questions... What should I pay for one? I've seen a lot of them for
$40,000-$50,000 with pretty low miles. How can I tell if it comes with AC and a radio? Thanks in Advance! |

Price range is where you stated for a used one. $40k with good miles is not realistic, guess it depends on what 'good miles' are to you.
If it has AC you will see a snowflake icon on the left button of the right knob on the climate control portion of the dash. |

Before you purchase one, unless you just want to say "I have a Z28", I'd recommend you drive a new 6th gen 1LE. Randy Pobst took that 3750 lbs (-100lbs from the Z) car around big willow a whole .2 secs faster. At the drag strip, A8 SS's are running 7.90's vs my 7.91 best in an 1/8th. This alpha platform is no joke. And you can get a fully loaded new 1LE for about the same price or cheaper than a used Z/28

They are out there and some may be in better shape.
I was at Reliable Chevrolet in Richardson (just north of downtown Dallas) a week and a half ago, saw a black one for sale there. Looked to be in great condition... |

Just picked mine up a month ago 1300 miles w/ AC.. was listed at 47k and oferred 44 out the door.. Couldnt be happier. Not sure how low theyll go in the next year but they are getting bought up pretty quick. Hoping 40k is the floor. Car is a steal at these prices IMO

I bought my black 2015 for $45K last October with 200 miles from a dealer, with AC and Stereo... I think that was close to the bottom...

$41k is the current dealer floor w/no AC and sold this last week.
Target price for a low mileage used Z w/AC is $43k private sale and $45k from a dealer. While many will suggest running and purchasing a loaded 6th Gen 2SS or 1LE, neither vehicle will ever handle the track or ever even remotely have the HP/TQ N/A upside potential of any used 5th gen Z. We're not gong to see the 6th gen Z for another year or two and price will be double of what the 5th gens are today.

The idea that the Z/28 "floor" is $40k is really mind boggling given that used GT350s are listed anywhere from upper 50s/mid 60s and used Rs are going for mid 90s. By most "real world" accounts the Z/28 is the better overall performer and, additionally, the GT350 (not incl. R) isn't a limited production run (will be offered in 2018).
It's been hashed out on several other threads so I'll not get into all the reasons about why the Z/28 didn't sell well. I will say that it has to be one of the most misunderstood and under appreciated cars of this era. Many of us benefited from it, but still hard to fathom.

But to say that the new alpha platform hasn't surpassed our Zeta would seem to be misinformed. The SS is by no means a better handling car than our Z, but Randy Pobst ran a 2.5 mile road course .2 seconds faster in a stock 6th gen 1LE which comes, down on power and on narrower street tires and not R comps like our Z. I'm not saying to trade a Z/28 in on one, but starting from scratch, it is a bargain.

The 350 is also not as old as a Z. Give it a couple more years and I'm sure we will see similar price points on a 350 that's 3 years old. From a marketing standpoint, I think that Ford and dodge both have had the right idea... offer a stripped out version of their top tier car, but make it an option to get it fully loaded. I mean, the Z was the guinea pig for the big 3. I'm sure Ford and dodge both noted that more people wanted a Z with A.C. and speakers. If GM had offered nav and HID lights... folks would've bought that too lol

A 14 or 15 Z/28 is going to find a bottom end valuation spot. Personally I'm betting we see the sum of the parts as worth more, but a average value for a low volume Z/28 seems to be 43 to 45K; just like my 09 Z06. But the 14 or 15 Z/28 -> LS7,TR6060, 3.90 differential, and ceramic brakes -> limited serial numbers... Maybe its just me, but I remember all too clearly a friend of my family from my youth who lived right behind us. He was a mechanic at Graff Chevy in Grand Prairie Tx, and I cleaned his '67 with a 427 tri-power every week when I was in the 8th and 9th grade. I also cleaned the 69 L88 427 tri-power he traded that car in on as a teenager. I didn't earn much, but I had the joy of taking care of two beautiful cars. I remember him telling me about engine, telling me it was something special. I often wonder if he had the sense to keep that car..considering they can be worth >$500K. I had the chance to ride with my neighbor in that L88, and it was seriously fast for its day; it left me with a hankering for a 427 for life. Then lo and behold, an idiot driver in Tulsa totals my 11 LS99 2SSRS - which we'd still be driving except a 23 year old without license or insurance ran a stop sign..(YES!!!!), and I re-cooped every dime I paid for that car plus $2100 in inflation -> and pulled the trigger on my '15 Z/28. It made my 2nd LS7...it was like it was meant to be. So you'll be catching me here for years; as I don't know if my neighbor kept that 69 L88 - but I know I'm keeping mine. Who knows perhaps time will prove the car a collectible and I'll have had a chance to own a car that made my blood boil..and lots of others based on all the comments I hear. That doesn't happen too often either.

Z/28s were heavily discounted during the first year. New GT350s and Rs are still going for well over MSRP. With the rare exception, you can't touch an R for under $90k. Is it ridiculous? Yes! However, for whatever reason the rabid Mustang fans are willing to pay the premium. Again, the Shelby name helps, but the Z/28 badge ain't nothing to sneeze at. Mustangs have always had a stronger following. You can see this while watching any auto auction. Pristine '68 Z/28 sells for $45k and then right behind it a '69 Boss 302 sells for $75K. For the most part you have to roll out a '69 ZL1 (or the '69 Sunoco Z/28) before you start see big bucks for Camaros. Mustang love is strong!

I sold all my old stuff, excect one fun BB Chevelle for the occasional C&C. These are special cars, regardless of sales success, crapshoot if they are future collectibles. 30K off msrp on a nice one is a fantastic entry point, and the best bang for buck you are going to find in the mid 40k range. You hit the nail on the head with the 1LE,apples and oranges. People with 3rd gen one's are still waiting for them to pop, not gonna happen. Millenials are playing warcraft instead being in to cars like us boomers , the trend is not good and why so many astute investors have been selling off their collections ahead of the decline. JMHO |
