No LS3 till 2010?

I was talking to the sales manager at my local chevy dealership, and he tells me that most likely the debut year of the 5thgen will sport the LS2, and an LS3 won't be added until 2010. Boo a whole other year of waiting! Oh well more time to save i suppose...

I sort of doubt it. The last two generation engines debuted in the Corvette 1 year before the Camaro. That would mean '09 for the Camaro. Plus, I think that the LS2 is supposed to be gone by then. Chevy needs to have a really strong first year for the Camaro and they know it. By making buyers wait another year for the LS3, they'd add another year to an already quite long wait. Plus, dealerships rarely are authorities on the automotive world. One of them insisted that the Magnum SRT-8 was really pure Viper underneath, except with a station wagon body. I didn't to point out that the engine, transmission, and chassis were completely different. That and everything else on it, save for a couple switches and buttons.

Good information here, but can some one give a brief description of all these motors. Please include the diffrence between them as well as pros and cons. This will help alot of us understand what everyone is saying when they talk motorsI.

I own a 01 C5 Vette and I am trading it in on a 09 Convertible Camaro.
I am tired of the vette, I have 60K on it now amd I hate to drive it now, My Modded 05 Mustang is faster than it and more fun to drive, believe it or not. My vette runs 13.4 @108 Best time.
My 05 GT runs 13.1 @ 105 with CAI, UDP, Tune, 4.10 gears & BFG Drag Radials. (1000 bucks in mods)
Adding CMDP and TCI 3000 Stall this week, Plans are to run 12.7 by august. (another 1000 bucks)
but I would have spent a total of 30k on this car and I am running high 12's and my 40k vette does 13.4
My 05 GT right now has the same HP as my stock C5 people ask why I like my Stang..

I hope the Camaro will be more refined than my S197 Mustang and I am sure it will be more fun to drive, with Aussie engineering for frame and suspension, and 400 + ponies, the Camaro will be a blast in the twisties and at the strip. I have said this before, the only two groups of people that you see driving a vette are OLD GUYS and HOT CHICKS. and I hate being Old
Because I'm 26 and married with no kids, and a C6 Z06 is what I really want. When kids come along I will have a daily to get them around in. Plus a Corvette is probably cheaper to insure.

I mean, depending on what chip they put in the cars computer, wouldn't that count as a separate engine in it's self? You see plenty of after-market chips out there to boost horse power, why couldn't GM do the same here? Anyways, I just thought I'd throw that out and see what you folks think.
'Chips' as you say really don't exist... what you are thinking of is the actual software that runs on the Engine Control Unit (ECU). Every modern car uses one of these to control ignition timing, valve timing, engine knock, etc... and yes, depending on how its programmed you can sometime eek out a little more power.

Generally this is MUCH easier with a turbocharged car since the incoming air is compressed by the turbo. The pressure is controlled by the ECU, and if you reprogram it to allow higher intake boost pressure, the engine will make more power.

On a Naturally Aspirated car (NA) you can advanced the ignition timing somewhat, and increase fuel injector duty cycle a little, but you're really not going to see nearly the same increase in power.

Additionally, the ECU is the only 'safety net' on your car... if something goes wrong, it knows enough to shut down... if you mess with it, you risk real damage...

I wouldn't count on huge power gains from just software... its not that easy.

LS3 uses new style L92/L76 based heads with rectangle intake ports, larger valves(2.16" I valve, 1.61"(or 1.58")E valve, a shallower (same as LS7) 12 degree valve angle, and (in the Vette) a higher lifter cam(.550 vs .520)
I had asked this question earlier Bcannan
