I have heard of tax reductions on cars like this that should help bring the price down to lower 30s.

You mean that old pickups with multiple fuel tanks are not the most efficient vehicles out there? My brother could go a couple weeks between fill-ups. You must be wrong!

Another thing is you have to consider your commute, that 40 mile range I am sure is under ideal conditions. what if you live somewhere where your commute takes 2 hours to go 20 miles and you are in 95 degree heat or 20 degree cold? you are going to use more electricity to keep the heater or the air conditioning going and thus reducing your range. Or if you live in an area like I do where you have mountians you drive through. Like on my car on my commute I can usually go about 300 miles on a tank of gas, but on the highway that increases up to around 450 miles. That is why a 100 mile car would be a much nicer option in my opinion. remember "Your Mileage WILL Vary"

Here's an interesting Article.

Nothing really related to efficiency / mileage but it show interest.

If your commute takes 2 hours to go 20 miles you either need to move or buy a bicycle.

"Brett Smith, assistant director for manufacturing and technology at the Center for Automotive Research, said even in small volumes, the Volt is a game-changer.

"It's an entirely different technology. It's an entirely different powertrain layout. It's a huge step forward," he said Tuesday at an industry conference in Traverse City.

Smith wonders, however, whether early buyers will wind up being part of an extended test.

"This and the other vehicles that are coming out in plug-in form, are for all intents and purposes because of some timing, they are in a lot of ways prototype vehicles being put on the market to test," he said."

Well for $30 - $40,000, that sucks...

"other GM workers are testing batteries to make sure they last at least 10 years or 150,000 miles. It would cost more than $10,000 to replace them."

$10,000 to replace the battery?

some people work big cities, (LA, NYC, Atlanta, etc) this is normal... My brother lived out side of atlanta and it took him 2 hours every day to drive downtown to work.
