Strong MAF sensor. Believe the hype.
So I've had my 2011 1SS RS for some time now, and I've had a nagging issue with mild throttle surging when going into neutral, as well as a choppy idle, and an occasional random bogging when downshifting and getting on the gas hard.
After reading thread after thread, about vacum leaks (couldn't find any leaks) Throttle surging (some think it's normal) The potential drawbacks of an OTR intake (I have a New Era, it's awesome.) As well as a plethora of other issues and solutions, I stumbled onto a thread about the MAF sensor. I'm sure many of you here have read up on the topic, but it never occured to me that my car just may have a weak sensor. Ordered my new "strong" MAF from Apex Chase, last week. It arrived today. Took all of 5 minutes to install. Here's the results. Low RPM surging: GONE Choppy Idle: GONE Bogging on downshifts: GONE Bogging from off throttle to high throttle conditions: G O N E Decel popping was also marginally softened. (my car sounded like a drive bye shooting. It's not as cool as you'd think. I promise. Especially at 5 AM when I'm typically coming home from work.) Overall I am a VERY happy camper right now. Prior to adding long tube headers, I really never noticed any of these issues. I thought a good tune would fix it. I was wrong. This may have been the best 100 bucks I've ever spent on my car. Thank you Chase!

When I installed my ADM Race intake this was the first thing I checked. I was fortunate enough to have a strong MAF from the factory.
Without a doubt this is a thing to be aware of. |

It is a crap shoot. Some get lucky, some don't. But like you said, definitely something you want to check.

I had a weak one. Swapped it out along with the Apex scoop and bottle. Very happy camper.

data logging can make it easy to detect if you have a weak maf.

What are we looking for? All I have ever seen is my MAF signal, so I don't really have anything to compare it to.

I have a strong MAF and my car has always idled rough and bucked in parking lots pretty bad. It also squeaks sometimes when the motor misses a beat at idle. Almost sounds cammed once it's warmed up.

Then once I pull out of my driveway and get onto the street, it drives perfect thru the gears, but as I'm slowing down like at a stoplight, it surges pretty hard as it downshifts to each lower gear. The rpms act like as if someone gives it gas right as its downshifting. This gets a little less noticeable after you drive it for 10-15 min but it never COMPLETLY goes away! |

I think I'll use BLACK10's method and monitor the MAF frequency with the laptop. I hate pulling that fastlane intake out.
