Bad power steering pump and the police.

So apparently my power steering pump is bad, which yeah whatever I'll take it to the dealer tomorrow. So I get home from work and it's 2am so I start doing circles on main street trying to see how bad it is. Well apparently it's pretty bad, I can't turn completly left unless I gas it a bit and then only very short thorws until it comes to fully left. Does the same to the right, only not nearly as bad. At idle I have NO PS. So while I was doing my circles and figure 8's the town cop shows up and wants to know what I'm doing. I tell him that apparently my power steering is out and I was seeing exactly how bad it was. He says yeah I think you're full of shit. I respond yeah I'll bet ya i'm not you wanna get in and see for yourself?? he then proceeds to turn his truck around and get behind me, coming up to my window and asks "ok so whats ur problem now?" I show him that my wheel just won't turn woth a shit and explain that I just wanted to get the full feel of things so when I call the dealer in the morning I can explain it the best I can, I figure what better time to do it than 2am. He says yeah there ain't nobody around I guess, as long as you have a legit reason for doin it, I just doin't want noone out here jackin around. I tell him I see his point and I've got all the info I can gather on it at the moment and I'll go home. He says well do you got a belt off or something? I tell him no, and the resivor is full too. He says well this is a NICE car you got here I hope you get it fixed. I say thanks and tell him to have a nice night.

And I don't THINK this is from hitting the curb because I drove it for a week with absolutly NO problems after getting it back. I just hope it can get fixed before 5am on Thursday when I'm supposed to leave for Ohio on vacation!

it could have had an effect on it. the pump might have seemed ok at first, but was in a "weakened" condition after the accident

did you find any leaks from the ps pump/lines/etc?

edit* you said the resevoir was full.... I'm wondering if you have a pinched line somewhere.

I'm not going to rule anything out. I just hope that the dealer isn't swampped tomorrow and get me in right away incase they need to order any parts. I already paid for my hotel and park tickets so I really don't wanna miss my Vacation.

Edit: After a search for "power steering" under the problems forum I found 4 threads where other people have had problems with theirs, such as the hard steering at low RPM's which I have always had (and just figured was normal).

I 1st noticed it whining on Saturday, and really first noticed the stiffness yesterday. Today was the first time that it would jerk as I was going around a corner tho, like the PS was kicking in and out real quickly. I guess I'll let the dealer figure it out. Either they can bill Progressive if it's accident related or GM if it's Warranty related. I'll update everyone tomorrow sometime.

Doing donuts kills power steering pumps because it overheats the hydros. Just sayin.

Just got back from the dealer. The cause is air in the system from the leaky pump. I know the pump was leaking before I hit the curb because of the power steering fluid that has been all over my CAI from getting in the belt. New pump should be in tomorrow morning and hopefully my vacation won't be delayed!!

Thanks!!

New pump is in and all is well. Service tech said it took him 75min to bleed the air out of the system, and that it was a real bi*%h. Oh well, Vacation here I come!
