How wide tire will fit factory rim?
Hey all!
i have a 10 SS. I threw on some 1 inch lower Hotchkis springs swaysbars/ end links... now I want to go bigger on rubber in the back on the ss factory rims! any recommendations on how wide i should or can fit without an issue ? Factory tire is 275/40-20 ....i was thinking 305- 315.. but will it clear? Also is that too wide? ... car is driven in NY 4 days a week. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOU FEEDBACK AND TIPS! |

I have seen 305's on the stockers but they buldged a bit too much for me. I'm running Conti DWS 295/40's and they fit perfectly. It also depends on the manufacturer. Tire sizes will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, even with the same numbers.

I had 315/35/20 nt05r's on my stock 20x9 wheels. Definitely buldged a lot but never had any issues.

it's going to look weird. not worth it IMO. but if you decide to get wider wheels put some 315s on that sucker it will look awesome and aggressive

Buldged... You mean sticks out the wheel well right? ...

Buldged means the sidewall sticks out past the wheel and tread. Kinda like a muffin top. As for if it will fit, look at your current wheel height to see how much clearance you have between it and the edge of the fender well, then imagine the wheel sticking out past that edge. It may not hit when cruising but i'd imagine it would rub when you hit a good bump. My 295's have never rubbed and they are just inside that lip.

305/315 on a stock 20x9 is pointless, IMO...the tire will bulge so much the actual contact patch will be the same as if you were running a 285/295. Can they be put on the rim? Sure, but you aren't going to see any traction advantage over running narrower tires rated to go on stock 9" wheels, and you're spending more $$ for wider tires that won't really work. Again, JMO from trying to run wider tires on the stock 8" wheels on my GTO.

Personally, I wouldn't go wider than the manufacturer of the tire you buy says. Tire engineers must have reasons for showing approved wheel widths for the various offerings, and as a retired engineer (not in the tire industry) I would follow those guidelines. I don't know exactly what problems mounting a tire on a wider or narrower wheel creates, but I'm certain it is more than just "looks". You could be creating an unsafe combination. Just MHO and food for thought.
