They may make it a mechanical lock-out too... In my old BMW 3-series, my current Frontier and the 2nd gen Frontier (current gen) you have to push the shift knob down into the gearbox to pull it into reverse; which is difficult to do unless you mean to and are trying. Shifting between forward gears would be lateral force, shifting into reverse would be a vertical force... very different muscles used, very hard to do accidentally.
Or at least, I hope that's what they do... reverse next to first never bothered me in my BMW but it might if I can do it too easily in the Camaro.

good im not used to driving with reverse on the right side since currently my first and only car is an AT, however with the manual driving that i am used to, with my dads car u shift to the left for reverse in 911 turbo. So i wont need much adjusting for the Camaro

Guys the TR6060 tranny has reverse on the right, not the left. (I have one in my GT500, AWESOME tranny by the way!) Must be the V6 trans with it on the left...

All the sticks I have driven have had reverse on the left side with a lockout. It doesn't matter to me which side it is on, I will adapt to either.

There will be a reverse lock-out i'm pretty sure, like most newer manuals have--no need to worry about accidental shifting into reverse.

If reverse is on the left, it will be wierd, but nothing i can't adapt to. And either way, it will most likely have a lockout, like my 07 Cobalt SS, where you have to pull a little knob up, in order to go into reverse. It confused me the first time i went to use it, but from that point on i haven't had any problems or gripes with it. In fact, its nice. Knowing i can't go from fourth into reverse at 110K (or whenever).

My VW has reverse in the upper-left and has a mechanical lockout that requires you to push the shifter down into the floor before moving it left beyond the 1st/2nd position. It's comfortable and confidence-inspiring. I'd rather risk backing into someone at a traffic light than missing the lockout going into 6th and have the engine stall and the car spin out on me.

Two issues with Reverse on the left side:
I personally never drive on the highway, it's all stop-n-go traffic and stop signs/lights, so I am dropping into first all the time. Also, if GM does put the Reverse Lockout button into the design, then everyone who wants to replace their shifter will be forced to spend more money on a more complex shifter, or may only have a couple options available to them. Personally, I see the Camaro's shifter being the first thing I want to replace. I think the Tremecs are all on the right side anyway, so it's a moot point for me. I don't want the Aisin tranny. But like TAG said, if it ain't broke... One other thing: Some have been mentioning that it would be difficult to accidently put the car into Reverse, or require a lot of strength, but Elie (garfin on these forums) did drive a pre-pro model in Milford, and did accidently put the car into Reverse. So, it happens. That car was a V6 with the Aisin manual. |

We've seen photos of the production car. There's no button. It's probably a mechanical lockout like I described above that requires you to push the shifter itself down.
