for the 2011, does the onstar remote start work even if your car does not have the factory installed remote start (keyfob) or does it has to have the factory remote start(keyfob)????????????

If you don't have factory remote start, the app won't show a remote start button. So, factory remote start has to be installed to be able to remote start with the app.

I don't work for OnStar but I am a software engineer. OnStar's claim is that the new gen 9 hardware is in the 2011 and that the old gen 8 hardware "doesn't support it". The key word in their statement is "supported". The gen 8 hardware has the ability to remote start a vehicle via a wireless signal sent from OnStar. It also has the ability to report diagnostics. Therefore when they say that the gen 8 hardware doesn't "support it" what they are really saying is that they were not given the resources or budget to go back and implement it on the gen 8 hardware. Since this is related to iPhone think about this. This would be like if Apple had come out with the iPhone 4 and iOS4 and said "oh i'm sorry the iPhone 3GS does not support iOS 4" when in reality it does. It is all about politics and money. There is no doubt that the gen 8 hardware could support the functionality (or at the very least a slightly reduced set of the functionality).

Well I think someone is NOT very truthful because it doesn't matter what phone you have onstar link does not work on 2010.
