cam DD worth it?
Is a cam really worth it for a DD? I love the way a cam makes the car sound, but reading through the forums about different cams, I think it is going to be more of a hassle for a DD... Opinions? Anyone have one with the SW retro cat-back?

The LS9 cam is a mild bolt in upgrade. It is inexpensive, can be used with the stock valve springs, pushrods and timing chain. It idles very similar to stock, still gets good gas mileage and drivability is like stock. With CAI and LT's it makes about 15 to 20rwhp over stock LS3 cam tuned. If you can do the cam swap yourself, it is a good upgrade at a reasonable cost.

You don't show whether you have an Auto or Manual... it makes a difference. Autos w/ a nice Torque Convertor make a great daily driver w/ a cam... Might be more of a PITA for a Manual

DD here. It would just depend on your expectations. I've been driving some sort of modified vehicle as a DD for as long as I can remember so to me its a normal drive and I wouldn't have it any other way. I can't stand driving a bone stock vehicle..too boring for me.
I suppose if you had been driving bone stock cars your whole life then you might find it "different". Is it worth it? opinions vary.

The greater the "lope" the more it will drive NOT like stock. So you didn't specify if you wanted the power more or the sound more. You can get a cam that drives and sounds close to stock that will still make good power and be easy to DD but once you get into those really lopey cams the driveabilty will begin to suffer.

You learn to drive with the cam...... takes a little while, but once you dial in how to launch it, you're golden. And yes.... definitely worth it

Good to know everyone. I have an LS3, and I believe that is noted in my Avatar. The LS9 cam might be the way to go since I have a slightly modified car already. I am pretty happy with the power almost at 400rwhp, and its more of the sound, I think, I am going for. This is my true daily driver and if I get a commute in traffic I think the lopey cams are not going to do me any justice. Since I am in afghan for awhile it doesn't really matter right now. I just think it would be kinda nice to make the sound (already to my liking) a little bit more unique and one of a kind. Guess when I get home the best thing would be to listen and drive in camaros with aftermarket cams.

If u are doing the install yourself, then by all means, go mild. If you are dropping $1500+ on an install, why not get the power at the same time? That kind of money for 20-30rwhp just seems like a waste. But then again..... to each their own.

I've always subscribed with the whole "if you're going to do it, do it right the first time" mentality.
While the LS9 cam is definitely a straight shoot install with nothing else required, the return on the time spent to actually install it is going to be a letdown. You're more than halfway into doing a "Stage 2" Cam and the payoff there is exponential. Let us know if you have any specific questions or needs...we can get you squared away with a selection that will make you more than happy for your money. Ivan |

I DD with a cammed auto with no converter.
It was a pain the first week but I got use to it fast and the sound is pleasing. You learn to toggle N and D in traffic . |
