Ac delco PF48 Vs UPF48R

Looking to tap into the forum expertice......., Getting ready for my first oil change, car has been sitting on battrery tender since late november unstarted so I figure Ill do the change before I fire her up! Just wondering if if there is a big differance in the 2 filters........ I picked up a Pf 48 with my mobil One at wally mart last night for under $4, just wondering how the rest of you guys feel about that filter.............. as a side note I will be changing the oil again in about 800 miles when i hit 1500 miles. And please hold the "you need to drive the car" remarks, my milage is super low because since purchase back in july 2012 work and other personal things filled most of my free time, so yes in almost 2 yrs I have only hit 698 miles on the odmeter.................. any feed back on filter would be great, thanks in advance.

GM recommends that you change the oil at or before 1 year of use due to it being a synthetic oil. So even in low use I woiuld recommend that you change the oil each year before you place it in winter storage. Also a catch can is a great investment for the longevity of your engine.

I use the UPF48R filter and it has a higher pressure rating and premium filter media. Just make sure you enjoy the car when you do get to drive it!

+1

I have higher oil pressure with the Melling pump, so I use the UPF48R filter. For a stock vehicle that isn't being raced every weekend, the plain old PF48 filter is just fine.

thanks! my bad on the missing the year mark, catch can is on my order list this week or next, been so many other things $$$$ popping up the toys have taken a back seat the last few months. I plan on going with the Apex can, seems like most of the members here are very happy with it........... so cant see why i wouldnt be!

actually if you will change oil that often use the non R version, if you will DRIVE THE CAR and change at factory intervals then the R is slightly better and come on theres no way you were too busy in two years to drive less than 700miles.

So using the upf48r instead of the pf48 will not cause any warranty issues?

to tell you the truth I was between work and 2 operations with down time car and other activities had to take a back seat, also take out the winter storage time and actual time to drive would have been under 12 months................ but I do plan on much much more driving this summer, only hold back now is the sand in my neighbor hood on the streets is so BAD from this winter I am holding off till they sweep, the one and only chip i have on the car came from these same street conditions...........makes me sick

I was taught decades ago to warm up the engine just before changing the oil.
Memory is sketchy as to why, something about particles being suspended in the oil making for a better drain (so that more dirt is removed by oil change)
Does anybody else do this??

Also, put a few drops of oil on the new filter gasket for a better seal/easier removal next change.

to add to what you said, I have heard over the years ( and this is only opinions) the best way is to let the oil drain over night as to get all the old oil out........... makes sense but a must????? guess its up to the owner I can say that when we change the oil In our 10 wheel Mack dump truck we let it drain over night then again it takes like 5 gals of oil . your comment about the oil on the filter gasket is spot on been doing that since I was a kid.

Do what I do. Passenger side approximately 2" higher on wood gets a better drain. Basically leaning the oil pan to get a total drain. Also I just bought this filter UPF48R , Tyler from JDP recommended it. Looks a lot like the Mobil 1 filter with a different label.

I was checking int to UPF48R filter and found this 2008 link
http://www.teamzr1.com/ubbthreads/ub...at&Number=2677

Basically the difference is a higher burst pressure rating, the internals are the same as the PF48 (Presumably migrated to the "E" non-metallic cage as the PF48E)

Derived for the LS9 engine, higher flow rates and higher pressure
